Food hampers at the Saskatoon Food Bank will soon be filled with moose, deer and maybe even elk thanks to a partnership with the Saskatoon Wildlife Federation called "Hunt for Hunger."

It allows hunters to give their excess meat to those in need of food.

"There's hunters that enjoy still going out hunting but they've got all the white tail that they need. If they can get one more deer for us, it helps everybody out," said Claudia Manning with the Saskatoon Wildlife Federation.

Two wildlife federation members voluntarily process the meat, which is stored in freezers and given out once the federation receives 100 to 200 pounds.

"Once people hear that it's in, then they come and they clamour for it because a lot of them have been raised on wild meat; they enjoy the taste and they know how to cook with it," said Manning.

Manning said they currently have about 300 pounds of moose and white tail deer, the most common animals that hunters bring in, ready for the food bank to pick up.
