Three Saskatoon firefighters are answering to an assault charge after a dust up with police.

The incident is said to have happened at around 2:00 a.m. Sunday morning.

A police cruiser coming over the Broadway Bridge noticed a fight in progress, and pulled over. Police say when officers tried to intervene, a third man allegedly got involved.

The firefighters are charged with assaulting and obstructing a peace officer.

Saskatoon Fire chief Brian Bentley said the firefighters have not been reporting to work.

"Just as a matter of protocol, and to maintain the integrity of the department, and the confidence that our citizens have in us, it was a decision we made to suspend them with pay, until this situation is resolved," said Bentley.

The trio will appear in court today.
