Flooding in the RM of Corman Park at its worst
The saga of water woes in the Rural Municiaplity of Corman Park are the worst they’ve ever been, according to the Reeve, Public Works, and some long time farmers.
“It’s to the point that we can’t really move the water anywhere. It’s just the entire area is saturated and there’s water sitting wherever it can go,” said Erin Franko with Public Works.
She said there are issues of flooding pretty much over the entire RM right now. Major areas of concern are the Grasswood Estates, Ashwood Estates, northwest of Warman and north of Martensville.
She said there has been a buildup of three years of too much rain and this year it hasn’t stopped.
“It started May 5 when we started getting notifications of homes flooding. The provincial disaster assistance program put their cutoff as Jun 26. In that time frame we’ve just had nonstop rains that have caused flooding of roads, houses, land,” said Franko.
Some major roads in The RM have been closed off because they’re sitting under water including Auction Mart Road, west of the Dalmeny Highway. The old Highway 11, Number 663, is also under water.
There are barricades up directing traffic not to go through these points.
“Follow the signs, do not try to proceed and go through the water. We’re not lying. It is bad and they’re not going to make it though,” said Franko.
Reeve Mel Henry said that roads in the RM are really taking a beating as rain every few days is stopping up work.
“The guys never really get a chance to do much more than just patch, you know go over and get the road passable and they don’t get a chance to get back and get it shaped up or anything and there’s another rain,” said Henry.
Henry said he’s been coordinating with the work Forman every day but the calls keep coming in.
“We just add it to the list. That’s the worst part of it. It’s frustrating. We can’t do anything much on private property except perhaps help people out with pumps or something like that,” said Henry.
Some Farmers who say they’ve been in the area for nearly 80 years said they’ve never seen water problems this bad.
For people in the RM wanting to apply for the Provincial Disaster Assistance Program an information night is being held July 25 at 7pm and on July 26 help with filling out the forms will be available between 10am and 7pm at the Municipality office located 111 Pinehouse Drive.
