Concerns are being raised in Saskatoon that children and youth are living in foster homes which may not have the capacity to care for them adequately and safely.

Children's Advocate Bob Pringle brought the issue to table this week -- and Saskatoon NDP MLA Danielle Chartier has brought it to the legislature's question period.

"In light of these concerns of the children's advocate, what extra measures is the minister putting in place for monitoring supervision of children and youth in care," asked Chartier.

Social Services Minister June Draude responded that the decline in the number of foster families isn't just a Saskatchewan phenomenon, but one that's occurring across the country.

"Our goal is to not apprehend children, but support families," she said.

There were 626 foster homes in the province as of last year -- down from 691 in 2010.
