Former Federation of Saskatchewan Indian Nations' grand chief Perry Bellegarde was elected Thursday afternoon for the organization's top job.

Bellegarde, of the Little Black Bear First Nation, was challenged by two candidates: interim chief Morley Watson who took over the position after Guy Lonechild resigned during the final year of his term, and Delbert Wapass of the Thunderchild First Nation.

The 50-year-old is a two-time leader.

Taking over the role of vice chief is Kimberly Jonathan, the first female since 1982.

Dutch Lerat was elected as the third vice chief.
