Regina Farmer's Market Not Ready for Change

Want to have a say on proposed guidelines

The way a farmer's market operates in Saskatchewan could be changing, and some people in charge aren't happy.

The Ministry of Health has drafted new public market guidelines, including an updated list on what foods are allowed to be sold. If the proposed changes go through, foods like perogies, pumpkin pies, sprouts and wild mushrooms would not be allowed because they are seen as potential health hazards.

Regina Market Manager Ada Bennett says Saskatoon and Regina are not part of the Saskatchewan Farmer's Market  Association and therefore are not being kept in the loop. "We are required to follow this guideline even though we don't get to have a say in it. So we've never been allowed to even discuss thisand neither has Saskatoon interestingly."

Bennett says she will be going to the ministry with her concerns. Health Minister Don McMorris says the ministry is doing consultations because it's been a while since market guidelines have been revamped, but insists nothing will be changed in the near future.
