Weather Forces Several Regina Cancellations
The effects are the weekend storm are beginning to be felt with numerous cancellations to a number of services and facilities in Regina.
For the first time in about a decade there are no school buses, cabs or paratransit running for Regina Public School students. Terry Lazarou says the weather has simply impacted the service.
"The primary reason is that most roads are simply impassable, especially the crescents."
And it is the same situation for students of Regina's Catholic division, no buses for them either.
But neither public nor Catholic students get the day off, classes and schools are open, but we're being told it is parental choice as to whether your child attends school today.
Different story outside of Regina, Prairie Valley School Division has no buses, but schoo is in session. However, Chief Pasqua Education Centre is closed and there are no buses to that facility, Standing Buffalo School is also closed today.
And it isn't just school-age kids being impacted, the weather has affected post-secondary facilities. The entire SIAST Wascana campus in Regina is shut, and classes at the University of Regina have been cancelled, but the campus is open today. The Dumont Technical Institute in the city is also closed.

Crazy
How bad is it when the university cancels classes yet both school boards expect kids to get get to school with no buses running and sidewalks jam packed with snow during blizzard conditions. I know it is finals week for highschools but come on, this is plain stupid!
Perhaps they should not have cut down on the number of school days from 200 to 197...
Oh relax...did you not go to
Oh relax...did you not go to school? It is days like these where kids that show up watch movies, sit in the library or play in the gym. It is parents choice. By not going kids aren't going to miss any school work.
Then why have them open at
Then why have them open at all on days like these? All it takes is one kid getting stuck in snow. Its sad that many parents are using the school system on days like these as their babysitter.
Schools have to be open in
Schools have to be open in case some kids who walk to school show up and then because of the doors being locked end up freezing or getting stuck outside. Its a liability thing.
Oh Relax...
Yes I do remember the days when we had weather like this. Back then, they closed schools. They even closed them for when it got to -30. We would eat our breakfast and wait to hear the news on radio after a huge storm to see what schools closed. This year not once were any of the schools closed when it hit -40.
Being born in 1980, I went
Being born in 1980, I went to elementary school from 85 to 93 and then highschool from 94 to 98 (in Regina). Not once, ever, was school closed. Ever. We had indoor recess when it was too cold, some days buses were not running, but school was never cancelled.
Snow days
In Nanaimo, schools are closed when there is more than a few inches of snow... Makes me laugh out loud when this happens! Then again, we do have one or two more hills to drive on.
Waste of a drive.
I drove all the way through the city just to make it to the university for an 8:30 class, only to find that it was cancelled. There wasn't anywhere to park anyways; the parking lots are filled with snow.
i agree with everyone's
i agree with everyone's comments.... as well they knew what was coming, and it pat fiacco had to come in on a sunday they shoulda have planned for a snowday for today.... and started announcing it last evening not at 8:00am this morning.... after people got all the way out to the UofR... and another thing if the side streets and avenues that are not on main drags are not getting done until friday, then what good does that do buses and cabs for the school kids.... its another waste... come on city hall cant you just spend the money and do a snow blitz... and do all of them and contract out....
Snow, snow, go away!
I agree; if I was able to get stuck in front of my house twice today, I can pretty much guarantee it'll happen tomorrow too if the city doesn't get our street plowed... Luckily I have awesome neighbors that came out and helped get me out so I could go to school!... but then I arrived for my 8:30 class only to find out that classes had been cancelled. And, if this wasn't enough snow... it's supposed to snow even more tomorrow!
