Calgary Tastes Saskatchewan Flavour

Chef extends love of Riders to his love of food
Story Tools

Calgary is getting into gear for the Grey Cup with a little help from Saskatchewan.

It's not just the Rider faithful heading west that are warming up the streets -- it's the expats that are already there.

"Canada's game, Calgary's Party." The signs are popping up everywhere, especially on Stephen Ave., where much of the Grey Cup Festival will take place.

Chef David Flegel runs everything food-wise at the Hyatt. He's also a Saskatchewan transplant and huge Rider fan. His love of the Green & White is taking over the menu at the hotel.

"We have Saskatchewan pulled pork on a bun, we've got Saskatchewan barbecue ribs, we've got Saskatchewan spring rolls, we've got Saskatchewan steak," Flegel says. "Pretty much anything on the menu right now is Saskatchewan."

He and Sous Chef Curtis Toth, another Saskatchewan expat, plan on dyeing their white jackets green. So far they have one failed attempt under their belts.
