NDP Wonders If Stadium Costs Are Rising

Allegations arise in Question Period
Story Tools

The opposition NDP is looking for more details on the province's stadium feasibility study after claiming in the Legislature Thursday the cost for a new domed stadium could be several hundred million dollars over what was originally forecast.

NDP MLA Warren McCall told the house today his party has been informed the study is predicting a price tag of up to $600 million dollars, nearly double the $350 million originally put forward. Enterprise Minister Ken Cheveldayoff wouldn't confirm that speculation, but he does indicate the business community will likely be chipping in to help defray costs if the project goes ahead.

"We've had discussions with about six private sector corporations and individuals representing corporations but what we are going to do going out on Saturday is advertise for request for proposals from those particular groups."

Its unclear what those proposals will consist of considering the project hasn't even been approved yet. He stresses those six corporations do not include government ministries or off-shoots, despite a further allegation from McCall who says the NDP has been told Casino Regina would put up its annual profits, "to back-stop potential operating shortfalls at the domed stadium."

Doomed Dome Stadium.

This doomed domed stadium is a huge white elephant and money sink hole. Taylor field should be repaired and upgraded and save all the tax payers a huge amount of money.

Duct tape

Yes, surely we can use a little duct tape, fence wire and left over barn paint to spiffy up Mosaic stadium! And then, 20 years from now, when we still have the outdated, crumbling, Put your company name here stadium, we'll have to build one for 10 times the cost as right now. This is a bloody shame that we still nickel and dime our one and only pro sports team. How dare we think big in SK!!!

The Saskatchewan Roughriders

The Saskatchewan Roughriders average 30,000 fans for every home game, have a mountain of merchandise sales that make other CFL teams look like mole hills. Why not build a stadium that can accommodate the players and fans with state of the art amenities. We now have been having world class musicians play at mosaic stadium playing out for sold out crowds. Lets leave our legacy for sports and the arts for generations to come and other Canadian cities to see who we are.

The longer we wait, the more

The longer we wait, the more it will cost. If we don't do it now we never will, get the shovels in the ground.

Good old negative NDP. Did

Good old negative NDP. Did we expect anything else?

NDP was informed by whom?

To quote from the story:

party has been informed

and

the NDP has been told ....

-----------------

Well those are some pretty serious concens and deserve to be answered but I'm curious to know they were told by whom....is it an "expert"....is it someone "in the know"?....is it someone qualified to speculate?

Given the recent juvinile behaviour on BOTH sides of the floor , I would expect that both parties would be a little more forthcomming.

The tax payers pay our politicians more than the average bear....I would expect clearer questions and even more clear answers instead of kindergarten antics.

NDP Scare tactics

This is so typical of the NDP, the report hasnt even been finished and they are yelling doom and gloom. Let the experts do the work, and let the financial people review it. The real problem with the NDP is they have no issues, so they have to make them up. Remember its two days short of 2 years when the citizens of Saskatchewan clearly saw the light and kicked their sorry asses out government. The world has not come to an end, and there is 20,000 more people in Saskatchewan today, and NDP is still losers

Hey craig. Do you remember

Hey craig. Do you remember the concern about the budget. Who was right? Was that not the biggest budget flop in Saskatchewan's history? Brad's memory lost and BC health minister who's telling the truth? Who all has jumped the H1N1 Que in Sask? The list just keeps getting longer. Looks like there is alot to hide. brad and the kids should just come clean and admit the screw ups. You should thank link for showing how the kids are messing up.

This is precisely the

This is precisely the problem in politics, pols who want to build monuments to themselves or to their government, whether it is the Atch holes in Saskatoon or the domed stadium in Regina.
There was a spectacular op ed in today's SP that roughly described the situation; "conservative" MP Brad Trost decrying taxes as being an assault on liberty (a sentiment I agree with) while at the same time having to compunction about living off those taxes and handing out those tax dollars to his constituency.
The original intent of government--to keep citizens free to pursue their own happiness--has been totally turned inside out; now government routinely infringes upon individual liberty in order to further its own electoral chances.

Oops. The above should have

Oops. The above should have read "no compunction"

Dome

Build it , build it , build it

Doomed Stadium

How much will it cost and who will be paying for it? I'm tired of the Wall government launching expensive megaprojects without anyone knowing the real costs

Doomed Stadium!

Here, here! Well said. I don't want any of my tax dollars going into this albatross. Upgrade Taylor Field.

go ahead

I want this project to go ahead. I do care about those who are in need of help as well. But I want my tax dollars to also benefit ME. I want my taxes and my crown corps to help pay for this project!!!

thats too funny..i was going

thats too funny..i was going to say same thing!!i'm tired of ndp saying we can't do it...!!!!!!i didn't realize we got to confirmed dome proposal...even that we got to lets build proposal...but link has got his crew lined up!!!lets kill IT before it gets of the ground(or paper!!!)and to think...i walked endlessly door to door for this crew...shame on link!!!

your too funny. Sounds like

your too funny. Sounds like the sask party another addition of the blame game. Its devine that the NDP is out of power for how long and they are still getting blamed. Face it little devine can not get the job done. The budget flopped. The knee and hip to BC blew up in his face. Trying to make a few bucks my giving away H1N1 for private for hire $$$ blew up. The back tracking on money for projects disappearring. The secerts behind the reports on Taylor field. Any true to it being renamed from Taylor to JW field or John Wall dome or DD aka devine dome.

That's funny

Because I like to think that I pay attention to politics pretty closely, and I can't think of 1 "megaproject" that the Wall government has "launched".

They are studying nuclear development options. They are studying a stadium. Please enlighten me as to a "megaproject" that they have launched.

I don't even care if we get

I don't even care if we get this thing or not anymore. Too much whining about it aleady. The lefties have taken all the fun out of it and have made it such an issue...who would want to listen to it if it went ahead. Lefties beat me. I have no more energy to argue about it with anyone anymore. Cancel the whole fn thing. Let's paint up Mosaic and let our kids and their kids watch football in the old barn. Let it be known that we are still run buy the constant whining and fear mongering by the NDP. Even when they aren't in power. The folk around here still believe in the fears and mediocrity the NDP installed in our brains over the last few decades. Too bad...a new stadium woulda been nice........

Build a new open air stadium

Build a new open air stadium at a fraction of cost of a domed stadium similar to what Winnipeg is proposing (< 150 million). Sure an open air stadium is not useable in the dead of winter but realistically, how many times will a show or function need a domed stadium in the winter months because one of our existing venues cannot accommodate it?

A dome is not needed. Most

A dome is not needed. Most extra events held there other than Rider games will only take business away from the Credit Union Centre, and will not generate more revenue for the province. Since when does being realistic mean that being negative?

Stop the insanity...

Are you people kidding me? 600 million dollars for a stadium? We don't have enough money in the provincial budget to keep the plans already made go ahead. They decided to defer projects because of this. Look in BC. To put a roof on that dome is close to 400 million! Pull your heads out of the sand and start realizing that this isn't going to happen. We can't afford a child hospital, what makes you think we can afford a 600 million dollar stadium? Quit whining that the NDP is saying that this will cost more than 350 million, most of you will be the first to complain that your taxes are going up or that you will have to pay a part in this stadium.

I was hoping it would be

I was hoping it would be said it would cost more than 350 million. You can't really get much of a stadium for that. Six hundred million is way more realistic. We will have one of the best...finally I will get a piece of my tax contributions back. Dwain...let the grown ups make the decisions now....How's it feel to be the leader of the party that chased thousands of our own people out of our province?

Good old negative N.D.P. -

Good old negative N.D.P. - yes just put some duct tape on
the old stadium - it'll be good. You are a tired has been
old party - get with the times. BUILD BUILD BUILD!!!!!

tne ndp are very anti regina

tne ndp are very anti regina , no dome , fighting about the hub, get rid of them

The 600 Million seems pretty

The 600 Million seems pretty high to me. The University of Phoenix Stadium built in Arizona a few years ago holds 68,000 people has a retractable roof and a retractable field. It's a very impressive facility. It cost 457 million, even with currency conversion thats still would be less than 500 million. I can't imagine what they would be building here for 600 million dollars, maybe a dome that fits over Regina.

Build it

Please build it and keep the politics out of it. Please use my tax dollars if need be. Taylor field is an embarrassment. A new facility of this caliber would make us the envy of the league and show the world that this is the place to be. It would be a symbol of success in these times of economic instability.

Keep the politics out and

Keep the politics out and use tax dollars....? Huh?
I am admittedly a fair weather Riders fan, but it seems to me that the Riders are already somewhat the envy of the league, specifically the fact that there is a section of fans at every away game. It was awesome to listen to the Calgary game through my stereo speakers hooked up to the tv and hear that the roar of the crowd was as loud for good Riders plays as it was for Calgary plays. :-)

And I can't resist..... If a stadium is a symbol of success, then why not build two or three or four? THAT would be a symbol....of something....I'm not sure what.....

What the big deal release

What the big deal release the report get the facts out there. About time Brad and Ken be open with us the taxpayers. So who has seen the report? Is it only SP friendly companies? With all Ken's cloaking it almost seems to be a backdoor project. Brad and the boys just can not get it done no matter what they touch. If they do something its screwed up and we the tax payers lose. Its time for a change in Saskatchewan, It was the lame and tired NDP and nothing will change with their new so called leader. Or the Devine clone who is still living the 80's. Maybe its time for fresh like Linda was before she was left out to dry.

Domed Stadium

I did not pay hundreds of thousands of dollars for a warehouse condo (on which I pay huge amounts of property tax) just so the damned city can plant a football stadium next door to me. If they want a place to put it I suggest they build it in the empty field behind the Leg building or perhaps out in Universtiy Park somewhere. But not in my back yard.
