Harvest Purgatory

Farmers Wait For Clear, Cold Weather
Story Tools

It's official.  The month of October has basically been a complete waste to Saskatchewan farmers.

Just two per cent of the crop was combined last week, bringing harvest progress to 79 per cent complete.

Last year at this time, almost all the crop was in the bin.

The latest crop report indicates many farmers are waiting for the ground to freeze and dry up, enabling them to get their combines back in the field.

Grant McLean, with Saskatchewan Agriculture, says some areas are worse than other, it just depends on where you look.

"In fact, (harvest is) close to 35 or 40 per cent (left to combine) in some isolated locations. In other areas, in the southwest in particular, individuals are all but cleaned up."

McLean added northern areas and the east central region are the furthest behind. They're only 61 per cent done in the northwest.
