Harvest Still Stuck

No progress made last week

October is looking more and more like a lost month for Saskatchewan farmers.

The latest crop report shows they made no harvest progress last week. It's progressed only five per cent since the end of last month, from 72 per cent complete to 77 per cent.

Saskatchewan Agriculture's Grant McLean is particularly worried that one-third of canola is still in the field.

"Many individuals look at that as a cash crop and it has a pretty high value," McLean notes. "So we certainly don't want to see that one out and deteriorating."

Usually at this time of year, 94 per cent of the crop is in the bin.

"Most guys are still endeavouring to get the crop off when they can and where they can," McLean adds. "We're just looking for some drier, open, sunnier conditions."

Cropland topsoil moisture is rated at 20 per cent surplus. McLean says it's not helping farmers get out on the fields right now, but he notes it provides hope for a good start next spring.
