Remembering A Cochin Tragedy

5 years since Canada Day 2004

July 1st is supposed to be a day of celebration.

But five years ago, Canada Day festivities turned horrifying when a drunk driver smashed into a row of turning cars just outside the resort villiage of Cochin.

Half a decade later, the crash is still in the minds of the first responders..

"I still cringe every time I drive by here," said Burt Elder, remembering the carnage along Highway 4, just south of Cochin.

He was, and still is, the villiage's Fire Chief. He was one of the first on the scene to the crash .

He then rounded up and commanded a crew of a dozen volunteers, while waiting for ambulance, and police to arrive from North Battleford

"A lot of my firefighters, that was the first time they had been to major accident like that, and it was pretty hard on some of them," Elder added.

In all, six people lost their lives in that crash, including Tarrah Higginbotham, and Angela Meyers of Saskatoon.

The person responsible, Norma Jean Mooswa, continues to serve a ten year jail term. She is eligible for parole after five years, which will be December 2009.

Why aren't the names of the

Why aren't the names of the other victims mentioned? Only the names of the non-native people are mentioned. Do they not matter???

Memorium

So much for remembering.

how much of a "victim" are

how much of a "victim" are you if you willingly get into a car with another drunk person and let them drive. They could be considered accomplices.

They matter a great deal.

They matter a great deal. But they were the innocent victims. The people in her car have to take some accountability about getting into a vehicle being driven by some one that drunk. Or does Personal Accountability not matter in this world anymore?

you need to relax anonymous

If you took the time to properly read the article, you would clearly see that only the 2 victims from Saskatoon were mentioned. Seeing as this is a Saskatoon website, that would make sense. Race has nothing to do with it. Stop trying to make something out of nothing.

Other victims?

What other "victims"? I'm assuming you mean the other persons who were with Tarrah Higginbotham and Angela Meyers in her car and the people who attended the scene and still have memories of it till this day? Surely, you don't mean the people who got into Mooswa's car knowing she was drunk and we're drinking also?? Are they really victims? Aren't they really accessories to the fact? Definition of accessory: aiding and abetting in a crime? They allowed her to drink and drive and willingly got in the vehicle with her. Sometimes the truth hurts.

I believe the only other victims that were left out of the story were the families of those unnamed people in Mooswa's car. They have to wake up each and every morning faced with the heartbreak of losing their loved ones and also the mess left behind by them because they made the wrong decision and got into the car with a drunk driver.
