Picketers Block Delivery Trucks

Strike at Coke distribution plant drags on
Story Tools

Out front of Saskatoon's Coca-cola distribution plant, what was once green grass just a few weeks ago is now hard packed dirt.

Workers continue to march outside the building as a two and a half week old strike winds on.

Nearly a dozen workers block delivery trucks attempting to drive onto the property.  One truck was delayed roughly ten minutes.

"Its regrettable,"  says Kelly Morrison, a striking Coke worker.  "We don't really have a whole lot of other avenues that we can go down."

Some store shelves are becoming nearly void of Coke products.

"Thats good,"  says striking Coke worker Ryan Wiebe, "thats good for us, i guess we're being effective that way."

Shannon Denny, public affairs manager for Coke, says the company is trying its best to service its customers.

"We're working through our contingency plans and are trying to operate our business the best we can,"  said Denny.

At the moment, the two sides are not bargaining.  One union member said it wouldn't suprise him if the strike dragged on into the winter.

Get back to work you bumbs,

Get back to work you bumbs, economies in the tank and your striking, your wage increase will never match what you have already lost in wages being on strike, be happy you have a job.

I couldn't have said it

I couldn't have said it better! I think they are striking themselves out of a job. They are happy that Coke products are becoming sparce on the shelves?! Okay, so force your loyal customers to try a different product....and like it! They may never buy your crappy Coke again. Awesome, drive sales down, which means profit goes down, which means LAYOFFS! Coke is NOT a necessity and people can and will live without it. You better go back and beg for your jobs back while you still can!

Before commenting, know the issue and spellcheck.

A 2 percent raise every year isn't much. We hear how good our economy is from this radio station every day! It can't be in the tank. Wages aren't the issue they are striking for. They want to keep their jobs that Coke wants to contract out. These jobs would not pay well and not have benefits that these people currently have. Do you honestly think that Coke drinkers are going to switch? Not likely.

My response: DO you think Coke drinkers actually give a crap about it? Most don't. When you lose your jobs, there will be a line up to fill the contract positions....Im betting over half of the striking employees will be in line for those jobs, paying less or not.

I think everyone should be tightening the belt a little, that means you coke drivers too!! I work in the Federal Public Service, and we have taken a wage freeze (even though we are against it), and you don't see us lashing out on strike.

We all want more money, and the economy is deflating in this province, believe it or not, just NOT as fast as other provinces, like Alberta and Ontario. Sears just layed off 200+ employees in Regina, Sear's won't be missing them...Coke can do the same thing.

Good luck...Im going to have a Coke...possibly a Pepsi if I can't find any Coke...and guess what...I don't give a crap about either one.!

what its for

i am a worker at the plant and i am fighting for my job, i like going to work and i am glad i am fighting for something i want to do, coca-cola has put a lock out notice meaning we cant go back even if we wanted to, our union rep's are waiting to talk but coke dosent want to, no matter what they are going to try and close the plant down in 5 years, so its fight so i have something to leave with when they close it down or go to work and get fired what would you do?

Yup...keep striking...stop

Yup...keep striking...stop the flow of Coke...customers will switch to Pepsi...and then you will be laid off.

If you can get more money driving a truck elsewhere..by all means..go.

If you can't...then appreciate your job and go back to work.

Get Back To Work

I agree 100%. Get back to work before your diehard cokies figure out that Pepsi is better! Be thankful you have a job!
