Regina Council Says No To Charity

Regina City Council is turning down a request for help from a charitable effort aimed at keeping the kids of Regina's North Central neighbourhood safe.

Michelle Porter is the Executive Director of the Souls Harbour Rescue Mission, a charitable effort that helps the poor and homeless. They've raised $1.8 million for a new youth centre and 60-space day care to be located in the heart of North Central on Dewdney and Athol Street, the former St Andrews United Church.

But the property's previous owner incurred more than $150,000 in overdue property taxes and penalties. Souls Harbour incurred those fees when they purchased the property and Council says it can't waive payment.

"Part of it was just a mistake as far as administration," clarifies Porter. "It was how we presented our documentation, I didn't go through the proper steps. So we're going to try again. We heard them say, 'Why don't you try some of the grants?' so I'll go back to the mission and take a look and see what's available for us."

Council members insist they have no qualms about the project or Souls Harbour, but they insist a dangerous precedent could be set if council starts forgiving taxes. The city administration will be working with Souls Harbour to ensure no further mistakes are made.

taxes

What a joke the city screws up and Souls Harbour pays the price. More buracratic crap, oh well Im sure the people who fouled this up will sleep well in there cozy beds tonight.Good for them.

I think this one ...just

I think this one ...just might bite the city in the ass

Why?

This is a charitable organization that works for the poor of Regina, meeting a need of mind, soul and body. A very few contribute to this kind of outreach. Why can't the city(tax payers) look at it as an donation to the poor. We give all kind of concessions to big business, airport authorities and the like. Why not someone who helps the poor?

Support from Reginans Increasing

Thanks so much for your comments and well-wishes. When it comes to government, it is, understandably, important to follow protocol. We are thankful Councillor Murray has stated he wants to support us and, in due process, will be able to help us look to make a brighter future for today's youth. Councillor Clipsham also said good words about the work of the Mission.

A point of clarification is that the Mission's projected annual budget of 1.8 million does not include the new youth centre and daycare. This money goes towards staying open 365 days a year to provide programs and services throughout six facilities in Regina. We are able to feed over 100,000 meals each year, sleep 100 men, women and children each night, and provide many other programs and services, including a year long recovery program.

Souls Harbour RESCUE Mission is not government funded therefore relies upon the goodwill and donations of individuals and businesses within the community. Thanks to all who have expressed their desire for Regina's Council Members to see the full amount of the taxes abated!
