Arctic Cold Comes After Snowstorm
For many people, it will be a day to fire up the shovels and snow blowers.
The snowfall warnings have now ended, though a blizzard warning is in effect for the Moose Jaw region, south to Assiniboia-Gravelbourg, and west to Maple Creek-Shaunavon due to blowing snow conditions. Mike Russo with Environment Canada says there's been 5 to 15 centimetres of snow in many areas, or 2 to 6 inches. He says he heaviest snow is closer to the U.S. border.
On the other side of the low pressure system that brought the snow, Arctic air is combining with the wind to create extreme windchills this weekend, in the minus 40s. A windchill warning is in effect for most of southern and central Saskatchewan, including Saskatoon and Regina.
The good news is that it's expected to warm up again with a bit more snow on Monday.
As of early Saturday morning, travel was not being recommended by the Highway Hotline in a number of areas, including Highway 11 between Bethune and Davidson, Highway 1 between Mortlach and the Alberta border, and Highways 6 and 39 south of Regina. The latest road conditions can be found at the Highway Hotline link on this page.
