FNUC Censured By Teachers Association

Shouldn't disrupt classes
Story Tools

Another setback has arisen for the First Nations University of Canada.

The Canadian Association of University Teachers moved to censure the school at its annual council meeting over the weekend, insisting the school hasn't done enough to fix its governance structure. There have been concerns over the academic freedom and interference by the Federation of Saskatchewan Nations since a 2005 incident involving FSIN Vice-Chief Morley Watson.

Jim Turk with the CAUT says the school was warned six months ago this would happen.

"We didn't want to censure. In fact we normally give six months notice that we're going to go in this direction hoping that in the six months the two parties can get together and we can get the problems fixed so we don't have to censure. That's why we haven't had to do it in 30 years."

It means that educators across North America will be urged not to take jobs with the school, accept awards or honours offered by it, or hold events there. Classes will, however, continue as normal.

He adds that the Association has received word that the school wants to meet, but Turk notes that some previous meetings failed to materialize.

Watson and Joseph legacy to destroy university.

Pretty sad that the only legacy Morley Watson will leave to his people is the destruction of the first accredited aboriginal university in Canada. What a complete waste and only for power.

I love this school!!!

This school has been awesome to me.
The classes I have taken are informative and professionally conducted.
The accomplishments of First Nations role models I have met exceed most non-First Nations role models i have met throughout my life.
The students, for the most part, are enthusiastic to learn and keep up to date on many current events issues in Canada as good as any other group of students.
Throughout my entire K-12 experience I never had one First Nations teacher. Since attending the 1st N. Univ, I have had countless enjoyable learnging experiences from numerous First Nations teachers.
I sincerely hope that FNUC, FNUniv, 1stNU, whatever you want to call it succeeds and accells far beyond this talk of negativity.
Furthermore, I have not ever seen or read one single story from the media on the positive things this school has done. The only time this school is reported on is when things are bad. I blame the media for a large portion of the poor image this school has outside of its faculty and students.

the media isn't MAKING up these stories !!

I'm glad you had a positive experience, but believe me, the media isn't MAKING up these stories !!!!! This is on a National level being censured by the Teachers Association and the Media didn't make that up.

When is it going to Stop!

As a student of FNUC I am very proud to be at an university that recognizes First Nations people, values and culture. In respect we are able to be proud of receiving an education in the first ever First Nations university in North America.
It's shame and personally I think that people are afraid the in this day that there are more First Nations people being educated in all areas. This university was created by our past leaders and education is our Treaty right. What's next? next is now the government wants to eliminate post-secondary funding in all First Nations communities. When is it ever going to stop?
How much discimination and rude comments are going to be made. No wonder our country is having so many problems. Maybe? people are afraid to see First Nations people succeed. Are they threaten by First Nations people? if people only knew the real story of what First Nations people had live through and no this isn't a pitty story it's reality.
It's surprises me how many people focus on the negative and not the positive and that's the only way to disrupt is to bring up the past. What ever happen three years ago, let it be and move,so that our world can be a better place and our unversity can continue to educated both First Nations and non-First Nations people.
