85 Shattered Insulators Caused Power Outage
SaskPower says the cause of Saturday's massive power outage was 85 glass insulators found laying shattered on the ground. When repair technicians arrived at the scene, broken glass littered the ground for a one kilometre stretch.
The insulators are used to connect the power lines to the power poles, meaning they are well out of reach from the ground. Since it's extremely doubtful that anyone would climb 85 powerpoles and knock out the insulators, gunfire is the best explanation. A road sign nearby that has clearly been riddled with bullets helps to reinforce this theory.
SaskPower's Larry Christie says due to the tension on the power lines, replacing the insulators is not as simple as swapping an old light bulb. Machinery is needed to maintain the tension in the lines. As well, a substantial number of technicians are required to operate the machinery and complete the repairs.
Christie says he can't begin to estimate the total cost of the damages. He says there is no way to put a dollar figure on how nearly seven hours with no power affected approximately 25,000 customers.
The Warman RCMP and Saskatoon Police have been asked to investigate. Christie is hoping that with so many people affected, the public will be eager to assist in the investigation.

I hope they trackdown
I hope they trackdown whatever backwoods idiots decided to use the power transformers as target practice. Home in the dark for six hours with a sick child is NOT fun!
night of the 29th
It was 11 oclock last night, and I was laying in bed ready to go to sleep. I live on an acreage about a mile west of Delisle, Sk, and I had power. Delisle didn't, and the only lights I could see other than my barn light were those of Orchard Transport. I saw headlights of cars, and I could see the Agrium Mine. South east of my place, looking towards the mine, I saw a bright streak in the sky. I was a kind of golden yellow, horizontal streak. Underneath it was lit up. I saw about 4 towers that all flashed in unison. Did anyone else see this?
Power Outage
The news keeps reporting that people were without power for a couple of hours, but in Langham we did not get power back til 1 AM. Time to step down on people that think it's funny to just shoot out power poles.
Power Outage
We had a potluck supper last evening, about 10 of us. Thank goodness all the food had been cooked by the time the power went off, about 6:00 or so. Also, thank goodness we love our candles and oil lamps, because we made good use of them. At approx. 1:00 am when the power came back on, my husband was suddently awakened to all the lights, tv, etc coming back on. We had a fun time, but how awful that someone would actually do something like this on purpose! Crazy people out there. I certainly hope this person/people are caught.
West-side Saskatoon (west of
West-side Saskatoon (west of Circle Drive) was out until about 1 or 2 in the morning for most people.
I didn't even think of taking the highway further west to see how far the outage went, but just assumed it "had" to be limited to saskatoon!
Could we call this "terrorism"? Well, maybe not - maybe just a massive act of vandalism...
Having the police
Having the police investigate really wont help anything.
Idiots being idiots.
The most anyone would get is vandalism and mischeif charges.
Rather see police time put towards better use than chasing after idiots.
A LIGHT SHINING
We were heading out of Saskatoon to Hepburn when we noticed the police directing traffic on the north end of Saskatoon. As we travelled north we wondered if the Christmas Concert Choir performance at Bethany College would still be happening if there was no electricity. It was indeed dark in Hepburn and the show did go on... the name of the show was very fitting. "A LIGHT SHINING" featuring GLORIA by Vivaldi. And you guessed it, performed by candle light. Wonderful show! To paraphrase one of the staff at the college: There may be no electricity but there is still power to worship!
Merry Christmas all!
I saw that glowing streak in
I saw that glowing streak in the night sky last night as well - I live in Radisson and it was up to the east of us. I also say let the police investigate, round up the jugheads responsible for shooting out those insulators and charge them with 20 000 counts of endangering life.
To shoot that many
To shoot that many insulators in the near dark means you are a hell of shot. Lets hope they brag about their feat to someone with some brains and they turn them in. Then some civil actions might teach them they aren't big shots.
Wahhh, the power went out.
Come on, Deal with it people, it happens. It isnt realy a problem if your prepaired. Remember what we did when there was only 3 channels and there was no internet? Ever herd of a board game, or playing cards.
As for the police catching the culprets, Unless your caught red handed speeding or by a camrea blowing a red light in this city, its a pretty good bet you arent going to get caught.
