Provincial Government Tops Up First Nations University Funding
The provincial government won't call it a bailout, but says it is topping up, for one time, what it provides to the First Nations University of Canada.
The province is giving the school up to 1.6 million dollars; half a million to cover operating costs, the rest to go towards raises that were agreed to three years ago.
There's also a $400,000 review that will be done to make sure there are no future financial crises like the one the school has been undergoing this year. Advanced Education Minister Rob Norris expects that review to happen over the next four months.
The money for operating costs will come with conditions -- the school will have to meet certain benchmarks for the cash to be released.
University president Charles Pratt says they've put sound financial management and record-keeping in place as the school works to become more accountable.

This is not a
This is not a bailout....please.
It is like giving money to a 14 year old on the promise he will continue to clean up his room--it is not going to happen. No, I am not racist, I am realistic--there is a difference.
now I'm a bit worried...
I'm a student here at FNU...hearing of financial bailouts doesn't make me feel very confident that I'm going to be able to complete my program....another question is why isn't there any federal funding coming into play?
what???
How can a university support 2500 students for multiple years up to 2003-04, not afford to train 900 students in the current years?
oh that is right, we have not send the 25% increase in funding every year, for the hard work needed to lose 1400 students.
when gov't funded first nation students (your own so to speak) won't attend your institution, why should we pay for it?
I think that it was a good
I think that it was a good agreement from the province, remember as First Nations people it is our Treaty right to education. It is not a bailout it is working in partnership. When are people going to realize that to get anywhere in todays world we have work together not against each other. It is only the people that speak negatively that are affected. I'm sure that there were other financial problems within Saskatchewan that the provincial government has helped out financially...maybe take a look at those also.
