Transit Review Hears from Regina Citizens

First of Three Open Houses
Story Tools

A reconfigured Regina Transit System could include neighbourhood shuttles and exchange nodes.

About two dozen people are gathered to hear the options at an open house in the Cathedral area. Consultant Bill Lambert says option one builds on the existing system, the second reconfigures it as a grid, and the third focuses on the main corridors. Each option includes a progressively greater use of shuttles in the suburban areas.

Angie and Jim Mamais own two Mr. Sub locations. They say without more transit service, it's tough to hire anyone, because the service hours near their stores are so limited.

Evelyn Gay says Sunday and Holiday service is a priority for her, while Alvin Yau wants to be able to take the bus to the currently unserved airport area.

All the options include longer and more frequent service. They also include service to major shopping areas via the Ring Road, and to the airport area and newly developed parts of the city.

More Drivers

If they are going to include more service routes, they need to be hiring more drivers. When interviewing potential drivers, transit and HR should be more focused on drivers with GREAT customer service skills. I have come across alot of drivers that look and act grouchy, and are sometimes rude. I am sure they say they have excellent customer service skills during the interview, but it is way different once they get hired. Maybe transit should have some undercover people examine these drivers, during their first year, which is the probation period.
