Tanning Industry Says Moderation Is Key

Sees No Need To Ban Teens From Salons
Story Tools

The tanning industry is speaking out against recent comments made by the Canadian Cancer Society, calling for those under 18 to be banned from tanning salons.

The World Health organization also thinks that minors shouldn't use sunbeds.

But Steve Gilroy, executive director of a group called The Joint Canadian Tanning Association, which is made up of tanning salons, equipment dealers and manufacturers- says parents should be able to make the choice for their teens.

He says most tanning salons already have an age requirement of 16 or 18, and anyone under those ages has to get parental consent.

Gilroy believes that moderation is key, and that people should get moderate UV exposure.

The Canadian Cancer Society says there's no safe way to get a tan, and that UV light from tanning beds can lead to premature aging of the skin and skin cancer.

CCS says a few minutes a day of unprotected sun exposure is usually all that is needed for people to get enough vitamin D.
