Regina Not Considering Tornado Warning Sirens
Too many needed to reach all homes
The city has long established plans in place in case of an emergency, a tornado being just that .
But how will you know if extreme weather is barrelling down on the city?
In America's tornado alley, every town has tornado warning sirens.
But sirens have only a one or two square mile radius so up to 1500 would be needed to reach everyone.
So the city's Bonnie Austman contends you'll have to rely on Environment Canada and the media to keep you updated and be prepared.
She suggests preparing a 72-hr kit to sustain you if an emergency, like a tornado, impacted the city.
www.regina.ca has more information and there are pamphlets available from City Hall.

Why cant we use the program like in Alberta?
I am a storm chaser myself and this just gets on my nerves. So many people i know do not even have INTERNET, even CELL phones. How do we get the message across in a matter of 10-15 minutes that destruction could happen with a F2- F5 tornado bearing down anywhere in Saskatchewan? Alberta worked it out and works fine with the Emergency Public Warning System (EPWS) Its been used and very successfull
The Alberta Emergency Public Warning System was created following the 1987 Edmonton Tornado as a joint public alerting initiative with CKUA funded by the Alberta Government. The EPWS gives warning to Albertans over the radio and the television to take action and protect themselves from disasters. This system is activated by trained users living throughout Alberta who, using their telephone, will deliver vital information regarding a threat to the safety of Albertans. The program breaks in to every source of available media. Can we not look at something like this with the amount of tornadoes this summer and the last few years? Or are we just plain LUCKY that no one has been killed yet. This is my 2 cents, for what its worth
I don't think that Regina
I don't think that Regina has a need for tornado sirens yet, but the advice given by the city rep is rather silly. The main issue with a tornado is where to take shelter if one occurs, not whether you have an emergency kit for later. Yes, everyone should have an emergency kit in a safe place, but that is not the foremost issue with a tornado sighting. I also heard her on the news discussing how to get out of your house if there is a tornado. Wrong. That is the last thing you should do. You need to get to a basement, in a room with no windows, or into the bathtub in a bathroom that has no windows.
We saw the tornado that touched down near Craik on the weekend and it was very scary. People do need to know what to do if they sight a tornado.
Tornado preparedness
Regina had the worst tornado in Canadian history (1912) and the city STILL has no plans, other than just watch TV/listen to the radio and hope they will mention an approaching storm. Across the border, Alberta has their emergency broadcast system. What do we have? We seem to be behind the 8-ball here. What about our schools? Are their tornado plans adequate? Your business? Your home? Taylor Field? Sounds like we have an "ignore and cross our fingers" plan to me.
dont waste the money
I think that it is wise Regina doesn't waste the money on a siren system. I can't imagine people nowadays bothering to hang up their cell phones, or loose their place in the Tim Hortons lineup at the sound of a siren. Few people heed common sense when it comes to the weather as it is. We tell them to stay off of highways in blizzards and then you hear stories of little league hockey team stranded down some back road in a van under 5 feet of snow. And then there is the classic pictures of cars submerged under water in a low spot or under an overpass during a flood.
1,500 tornado sirens would
1,500 tornado sirens would be needed?
Yeah right.
Oklahoma City installed 181 tornado sirens that cover every square inch of the city and that city is 1,608sq km as opposed Regina at 118sq km.
Sarnia, Ontario is 164sq km and has 4 tornado sirens that cover 50% of the city.
Regina city government is a joke.
