Three Saskatchewan Residents Named To Order Of Canada
Metis Author and elder Maria Campbell is one of three Saskatchewan people named to the Order of canada yesterday. Campbell may be best known for her first book, "Halfbreed" which continues to be taught in schools today. She is being honoured for "her contributions to Canadian literature and media as a writer, playwright, filmmaker and educator, as well as for her advocacy of Métis and Aboriginal issues."
Also named to the order is Father Andre Polievre of Saskatoon. According to the Governor General's website, Polievre is recognized, "for providing social and moral support to Aboriginal and inner-city youth for more than 20 years, and for helping steer them away from the pitfalls of addiction and gang violence."
Lorne Scott of Indian Head has also been named for his work in nature conservancy. Scott has headed many environmental and nature causes, including his role as president of the Saskatchewan Wildlife Federation and director of the organization that forced the saskatchewan government to halt the Rafferty/Alameda Dam Project because a full environmental review of the project had not conducted.

Dr. Morgentaler - Order of Canada
Absolutely not........how many ex-cons do you know who get this award? Also - He only wanted abortion access for women in Canada to get rich - line his own pockets - not very noble.....and if you think otherwise - get real.
Dr.Morgentaler - Order of Canada
One previous comment states that he wanted abortion to get rich. I rather suspect that his legal fees would have kept him poor for many years. He could have avoided the issue and made a lot more money.
However, he should not have been awarded the Order of Canada as he is, even today, too divisive a figure.
Morgentaler and the Order of Canada
I am deepely saddened that the Order of Canada was given to Morgentaler a man who is responsible for killing future Canadians. I hear this news a day after Canada Day. On Canada Day ,I spent the the day with my children, and yes I am saddened to realize many others will never have this opportunity. Our own Saskatchewan nominees were people who made lives better, they did not destroy lives. Why were they not picked? Canada has been disgraced by the decision to pick Morgentaler to receive the Order of Canada.
Dr. Morgentaler - Order of Canada, Absolutely
Kathleen,
I think you should get real. Doctors make far more money if women choose not to abort (or if people such as yourself had their way and women had no choice). Which is more profitable, a one-time procedure done in the first trimester or several prenatal appointments, a hospital birth including treating any maternal and infant complications, and years of pediatric care? Clearly, if OBGYNs wanted to make more money it would be in their best interest to ensure that as many pregnancies as possible were carried to term. Regardless of one's views on abortion, one cannot seriously argue that abortion providers are just in it for the money. I feel that Dr. Morgentaler is a brave man who put his life on the line to help ensure a better quality of life for many Canadian women.
Maria Campbell
I am most proud to know that Maria is receiving this honor. I am very disappointed that her great achievement is being overshadowed by reactions to the doctors notoriety. Perhaps he sould just do the honoable thing and recline????? The other nominees have promoted good education and solutions to healthy living. I feel with the amount of birth control products out on the market, women should be more responible for the care of their bodies and not have to resort to such drastic means the abortions bring. Adult man and women should be more responsible when having unpretected sex. Maria and Lorne, and Fahter are to be congratulated on their nomination and should not be overshadowed. Thank you
