Stony Rapids Residents Warned

Fire officials tell residents to stay home
Story Tools

Stay in your homes.  That's the warning coming from RCMP for residents in Stony Rapids. Like Uranium City, Stony Rapids is now engulfed in thick smoke from a forest fire.

The smoke has resulted in the closure of the airport and a road, but Mounties say no homes are in imminent danger.

74 residents from Uranium city remain away from their homes due to a fire only 4-kilometers away.

RE: Stony

I am presently in Stony Rapids.

The airport was only temporarily closed this morning because of the heavy smoke covering the hamlet. Visibility at noon was only 1/4 mile. A slight breeze came this afternoon from the north-northwest & blew the heavy smoke out of the hamlet to allow the airport to reopen & water bombing to continue at around 2pm. The airport is OPEN, but the road to Black Lake is still closed & last I heard, the fire was located nearby the Sasktel communications site, south of the hamlet. The TransWwest Air regularly scheduled flights are scheduled to arrive this evening.
