Saskatoon Official To Work Grey Cup
Saskatoon's Tim Kroeker will get a thrill of a life time for Sunday's Grey Cup. Kroeker will serve as a line judge for the 96th CFL championship game in Montreal. Kroeker has been an CFL official for the past three years. The 38 year old Kroeker has worked with veteran referee Jake Ireland for the majority of the 2008 season. Kroeker said "Part of the reason for the reason why we do it is the pressure. It's part of the attraction".
Kroeker is a teacher at Sion Middle School in Saskatoon.
Kooteny Ice's Blades
The Kootenay Ice defeated the Saskatoon Blades 4-3 on Wednesday night at Credit Union Centre. The Ice scored two shorthanded goals in the second period. Ian Barteaux broke a 3-3 tie by scoring the winning goal 2:59 seconds in to the third period. Blades captain Derek Hulak scored two goals for the home side.
The Blades now lead the WHL's east division by just one point. The Blades host Brandon on Saturday at 7:05pm at Credit Union Centre.
Pats Shut Out Chiefs
The Regina Pats blanked the Spokane Chiefs 2-0 at the Brandt Centre on Wednesay night. Linden Rowat was superb in net, stopping 30 Chiefs shots. Jordan Eberle scored his 18th of the year on the power play in the first period. Garrett Mitchell helped the Pats take a 2-0 lead mid way through the second period.
The Pats are now one point back of the Blades for top spot in the WHL's east division. The Pats visit Swift Current Friday night.
Swift Current Hosts World Women's Curling
It's been a well-kept secret in the city of Swift Current and the curling community, but now it's out in the open.
The city has been awarded the 2010 World Women's Curling Championships. The Canadian Curling Association's Warren Hanson says a city the size of Swift Current is actually a pretty good fit for the event.
"We had great success in Grande Prairie in 2006 in a similar-sized building and community and the same thing in Vernon last year. So coming into Swift Current with this event with the same size complex is exactly what we wanted."
Regina Mens Bonspiel Coming Up
The Regina Mens Bonspiel happens November 28-30 at curling rinks across Regina. Entry fees are being taken now with the cost being 260 dollars per team. 120 dollars per team if you are a high school rink. Entries should be mailed to the Regina Bonspiel Association, P.O Box 173, Regina, S4P 2Z6. There is a 5 game guarantee with the first draw happening November 28 at 3 o'clock at the various rinks across the city.
NHL Central Scouting Releases First List
NHL central scouting released its first list of draft eligible players today in all 3 Canadian junior leagues and European prospects. The top ranked WHL skater is Saskatoon's Jared Cowen who is a defenceman for the Spokane Chiefs. Regina Pats forward Garrett Mitchell is ranked 17th. Teammate Damien Ketlo is ranked 3rd amongst goaltenders. All three players mentioned will be on the ice Wednesday night in Regina when the Pats take on the defending Memorial Cup champs from Spokane in a 7 o'clock start.
WHL To Begin Drug Testing
A random drug testing program will start in the WHL this week but commissioner Ron Robison isn't expecting the program to be surprising. Robison isn't expecting to see many if any positive tests because of the way member clubs already handle the issue with their players.Positive tests will be made public and will result in five- to 10-game suspensions for first-time offenders.A second positive test carries a 25-game ban and a third carries a two-year suspension.Testing officials will show up prior to a game and randomly select players to provide a urine sample.
Swift Current Gets Major Sporting Event
Tuesday was a big day for the city of Swift Current. The Canadian Curling Association and the World Curling Federation announcing that Swift Current will be the host venue for the 2010 Ford World Womens Curling Championship. The event will run March 20-28 and will be happening just after the Vancouver Olympics so there is a good chance that Olympic medallists may be taking part. The 12 country competition will be held at the Credit Union I-Plex.
