HISTORY:  Long time Morning Team Brent Loucks and Penney Murphy created the Adopt A Family program in 1988- bringing businesses, communities, families and individuals together to help less fortunate Saskatoon and area families.

The growth of the program in twenty one years has been astounding! $5000 was raised in 1988 and over $100,000 in cash, food and gifts was raised in 2008.  More than 400 families, including 1300 children, received gifts and a wonderful meal for Christmas.  There are many incredible examples of children who received gifts through the Adopt A Family program, and were so emotionally impacted by the random act of kindness, that as adults have chosen to help another local family.

THE NEED:  Christmas is the one time of the year where families and children should be able to count on something just a bit special.  The families that benefit from Brent and Penney’s Adopt A Family come from a variety of circumstances- homes where a parent has recently been laid off, single parent homes, and/or low-income households. The demand grows every year, and with the amazing support of Saskatoon people, the program grows with it.

Last year we added Brent and Penney’s Adopt a Senior.  Many of our senior citizens live on their own, on limited income and often with no family living nearby.  You can help bright a person’s life and deliver a Christmas Gift to a senior, along with food for a Christmas meal.

HOW IT WORKS:  Families in need can register with the Salvation Army in Saskatoon in person or online at Newstalk650.com, November 16th to December 17, 2009.

Businesses or families interested in adopting can contact us online at Newstalk650.com beginning November 16th.  You will be matched with a family or a senior that most closely suits your request. For example, some listeners may want to contribute to single parent families while others want to help families who have children the same age as their own kids.  The shopping begins!  Following the provided guidelines, you will pick up gifts and a meal for your family and deliver it before December 20 (unless prior arrangements have been made with your adopted family).
If you are unable to Adopt a Family for Christmas, you can still help by making a monetary donation to the program, and we can make arrangements to provide gift cards for gifts and food to families in need.  Through a partnership with the Saskatoon Community Foundation, tax receipts can be issued for monetary donations.   Visa and MasterCard will be accepted.

If you are interested in adopting a family or a senior for Christmas, please fill out the attached form and email it to adoptafamily@newstalk650.com or drop it off at News Talk 650 CKOM (715 Saskatchewan Crescent West).

Yours sincerely,
