The war medals of one of Saskatchewan's most decorated WWI heroes are being sold and two men are trying to get them back for Regina.

Dave Thomson repatriates war medals to their home town, and he has access to two of Edward "Hick" Abbott's medals.

Thomson is trying to acquire two rare medals Abbott won in WWI before he was killed in action -- his British war medal and his Military Cross and Bar.

Thomson is working with Major Keith Inches at the Saskatchewan Military Museum in Regina. Inches says it's not just the military record that makes Abbott important. It is his name on the Abbott Cup, which was awarded each year between 1919 and 1999 to the winning Junior "A" hockey team in western Canada.

"Because of his connection with all these sports in the early years of the province and because the cup was in play for 90 years. You know anyone else in Saskatchewan whose had a cup in play for that long of a period?" said Inches.

Inches says those sports mean the medals could be displayed at places other than the museum.

The men are reaching out to the community to try and raise money for the medals. The asking price is $15,000.
