A Message to Grinchy Grown-Ups On Halloween.

Once again, it’s Halloween…which, of course is for kids, pretty much hands down the most fun night of the year.

But I’m getting the sense that increasingly, in our ‘No-fun society,’ there are people who are saying no thanks to Halloween.

There are even signs they can put up now (see above) that say “No tricks, No treats, No thanks!”  They feature a jack o’lantern in the circle with a line through it and at the bottom, have the nerve to add, “Have Fun!” I’m actually encountering people who say they don’t take part.  They may not go so far as to put up a sign, but they just turn out the lights and go downstairs. And their reasoning?  Well in one case it’s that kids today are rude and so they can’t be bothered to give them candy.

And I just think; how wrong, how misguided how....grinchy!

I know it’s a free country and everyone can do what they like, but I say that if you trick or treated as a kid…that if you got candy then, it’s grinchy to now refuse to give out candy. There is an unspoken contract involved here.

So, suck it up! Buy some candy, quit being so grouchy, enjoy the evening.  For one night, don’t worry if the kids are trotting across your lawn, or even whether they remember to say thanks.  Yes they should, but it’s Halloween.

Just try to enjoy the excitement on their faces, the shine in their eyes, and if it helps, the knowledge that they’re going to be wired on sugar tonight and you don’t have to deal with it.

The text that accompanies

The text that accompanies the download of the poster reads:

"Halloween, or All Hallows Eve, is believed to have derived from a pagan festival. It is traditionally the night when ghosts and spirits have the power to roam the world.

Halloween falls on October 31st each year.

Devon and Cornwall Constabulary respect those people in the community that wish to enjoy the 21st century Halloween. However, there are members of the community that would rather not be involved. We should all respect that wish and avoid causing trouble or nuisance to any other person.

To assist those people that would rather not participate in Halloween, the constabulary has again made available the window poster, see below, that can be displayed in household windows at the front of your house to deter callers during the festivities.

Those of you who are ‘trick or treating’ are asked to avoid households displaying the window poster and in so doing assist in preventing any trouble or nuisance being caused.

Above all, please have fun, stay safe and do not be the cause of trouble or nuisance to others."
