Cause of Redekop fire determined

Investigators have finished looking into the fire that decimated the Redekop Manufacturing facility on Highway 16 out of Saskatoon, and determined the cause.

Emergency services officer Dave Needham with the Ministry of Public Safety Policing explained the source of the blaze which cost millions in damage.

"The cause of the fire was welding sparks in flammable material as they were renovating the paint job."

Because it was an accident, nobody will face any charges or fines.

Cree Nation's election dispute reaches federal court

Peter Ballantyne Cree Nation man Harold Linklater had his case heard in federal court on Thursday by video conference, stemming from an April dispute when the community's appeal commitee denied his allegations of election fraud.

Linklater had asked for a recount when he lost the April election by just nine votes; he was concerned about bribery and fraud, and thinks the committee ignored him.

"I believe under election act, you know our code, it merits a review,"

Paterno ousted over child sex scandal

Hundreds of Penn State University students are protesting after legendary football coach Joe Paterno was ousted over a child sex scandal.

The abuse scandal involves former Penn State assistant football coach Jerry Sandusky.

Paterno and the university president were both fired Wednesday night for the way they handled the sex-abuse allegations.

Boy airlifted after being shot while hunting near Meadow Lake

A boy has been airlifted to hospital after being shot while hunting north of Meadow Lake.

RCMP say the teen boy was shot by another male youth while hunting in a rural location north of Meadow Lake.

It happened at about 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday.

The injured boy was airlifted to a Saskatoon hospital. The extent of his injuries or the age of the boys is not known at this time.

Meadow Lake police say no arrests or charges have been laid at this time.

A full police investigation is being conducted.

A section of the Trans-Canada Highway just west of Regina was named the "Saskatchewan Highway of Heroes" at a ceremony on Wednesday afternoon, reminding some in attendance of family members who gave their lives in service.

Attendee Donna Kadash thought of her nephew Corporal James Hayward Arnal, as snowbirds flew overhead.

"He's probably sitting on the front one there, with his hands held high."

Arnal was killed in Afghanistan over three years ago.

Saskatoon mayor sees economic growth on horizon

Saskatoon mayor Don Atchison told the city's business community to expect economic growth at a North Saskatoon Business Association luncheon on Wednesday.

"If you think we're going to stay at 235,000 people and that's the end of the line, you're going to be terribly disappointed."

The mayor believes Saskatoon's population will one day be one million.

Jerrell Freeman up for CFL's Most Outstanding Defensive Player award

Saskatchewan Roughriders’ Jerrell Freeman is up for the CFL's Most Outstanding Defensive Player award.

Freeman, who just completed his third season with the Roughriders, has been selected as the west nominee for the award.

He's up against Winnipeg Blue Bombers' Jovon Johnson.

The east and west nominees were selected by a group of 70 voters, including Football Reporters of Canada and CFL head coaches.

Roughriders G.M. Taman given full control

The Saskatchewan Roughriders have announced that Brendan Taman will continue to be the general manager of the team and will take over as head of football operations.

The team has eliminated the Vice President of Football Operations position previously held by Ken Miller.

“We will not be replacing Ken (Miller) with a new vice-president of football operations. Rather, we will be returning to a more traditional structure with Brendan (Taman) being GM and having full control of football operations,” said Jim Hopson, president and CEO of the Saskatchewan Roughriders.
