Regina mayor announces formal plan for inner city revitalization project
Regina Mayor Pat Fiacco is revealing a solid plan to try and move forward with a massive inner city revitalization project.
At a meeting on Monday, city council will vote on a three-phase plan that could see work begin on a new stadium as early as next spring.
Half a million dollars would be set aside to fund the first portion of the project. The city will begin formal negotiations with CP Rail to buy the container yards north of downtown right away.
Gary Etcheverry resigns from Roughriders
The Saskatchewan Roughriders announced the resignation of defensive assistant Gary Etcheverry just days before the start of training camp.
Vice President of the Riders, Ken Miller, says Etcheverry will be looking for business opportunities instead of coaching football this season. Etcheverry was demoted within the Roughriders coaching staff after losing his defensive coordinator position to Richie Hall.
Two prisoners escape from Prince Albert institution
Prince Albert RCMP are investigating the escape of two prisoners
from the minimum-security Riverbend Institution in Prince Albert. It
happened at around 9:50 p.m. on Wednesday, May 25.
An extensive search of the area didn't turn up the men.
Thiry-one-year-old Christopher Gibson (shown on the left) is described as being 6'1",
268lbs, with brown hair and blue eyes. He has chinese symbols and a
rose tattooed on his left forearm. The other escapee is 37-year-old
Saskatchewan's credit rating given highest level possible
Saskatchewan continues to show it's economic strength.
For the first time ever, the province's credit rating has been listed as AAA, the highest level possible.
Finance Minister Ken Krawetz says it's mainly for a few reasons.
"In lieu of our debt repayment, our projected budgetary expenditures and surpluses."
While the government won't be borrowing any money yet, as they are in a surplus scenario, Krawetz says this will help crown corporations.
Government wants reassurance final exams won't be affected by potential work action
A plea today from the Government-Trustee Bargaining Committee to the Saskatchewan Teachers Federation.
They want reassurance from the teachers that final exams won't be affected by any potential work action.
School Board Association President Sandy Urban Hall says the clock is ticking.
"Students have been accepted into post secondary programs based on the fact that they need to have those final marks in. It also would impact scholarships."
Fatal accident on Gordon First Nation
A 26-year-old man is dead after being hit by a car Saturday morning.
It happened at around 4 a.m. on the Gordon First nation. That's about an hour north of Regina.
Police say the man was walking along a poorly lit grid road at the time. After hitting him, the driver apparently stopped and called 911.
The man died at the scene. We have yet to hear whether charges will be laid.
Regina storm chaser in Missouri when tornado ripped through Joplin
As a tornado destroyed Joplin, Missouri, yesterday, storm chaser Greg Johnson was in the area chasing other storms.
Johnson wasn't tracking that storm for his own safety, but went to the region on Monday and says he's never seen anything like it, "I was in Arkansas on April 27th for the super out break, the town that I was in was hit, it was devastated as well, but it's not even close to what I'm seeing here in Joplin"
The destruction so far is unheard of says Johnson, "from what we can tell this storm leveled in excess of two thousand structures."
Labour disputes across Saskatchewan
The long weekend may be over, but another week of labour unrest is just beginning. Wednesday, Saskatchewan teachers launch a two-day strike, leaving parents looking for child care.
It means classrooms will be dark and teacher-run extracurriculars like track meets are cancelled. With grade 12 graduation looming, students maintain they're the ones with the most to lose.
