NEWTOWN, Conn. - Six months after the Newtown school shooting, the tragedy will be marked with a moment of silence, the reading of thousands of names of gun violence victims and calls around the country to pass legislation expanding background checks for gun purchases.

Family members, elected officials and other leaders will gather in Newtown on Friday for a day of remembrance and a call to action. The reading of names is expected to take 12 hours.

WASHINGTON - The Senate has voted to kill a GOP measure preventing immigrants here illegally from taking the first steps toward citizenship until the U.S.-Mexico border has been under control for six months.

The vote was 57 to 43 to defeat the measure offered by Sen. Chuck Grassley, an Iowa Republican. It was the first amendment voted on regarding the far-reaching legislation that would remake the U.S. immigration system and open the door to citizenship for millions.

WARSAW, Poland - A Polish court on Thursday handed a two-year suspended prison term to a communist-era interior minister for his role in implementing martial law in Poland in 1981.

The verdict is the latest effort by democratic Poland to hold communist-era officials accountable for abuses during their rule.
