It all started when BC's Dante Marsh appeared to grab Rider receiver Corey Grant's facemask, causing him to fumble the ball - which Marsh recovered. No penalty was called.
Marsh then trotted over to BC's bench and allegedly threw the recovered ball into the stands, taunting Rider fans. Nice.
Rider fans responded by raining beer cans down on the Lion's bench. Play halted as Lion's coach Wally Buono herded his players onto centre field and the public address announcer warned fans to settle down and keep their beer cans to themselves.
After the game, BC Lion's kicker and Regina resident Paul McCallum could barely contain his righteous indignation. "What did we do to deserve getting projectiles launched at us?" he wailed, and then going on to explain how his teammate Jason Clermont is "embarassed to say he lives here and he's born, raised and played university here, high school, everything." (I wonder how Clermont - a guy who lives and sells real estate in Regina - feels about McCallum spilling this little revelation.)
Anyway, McCallum wrapped things up by announcing that "as a parent, I won't bring my kids here. I won't." (I'm not saying it actually happened, but I'm assuming he also stomped his foot and crossed his arms emphatically.)
So okay, Marsh's idiotic display was just that - idiotic, but it doesn't justify how these select few Rider 'fans' (and I use the term loosely) responded. It was classless, dangerous and embarassing, given that it played out on national television. It's common knowledge that Saskatchewan has the absolute best fans in the CFL, and sometimes it feels like the rest of the league is always looking for a reason to turn that passion and enthusiasm into something negative.
That being said, I'm not going to deprive my four year old son of the experience of attending a Rider game. Kids can and will be exposed to grownups doing bad things everywhere. Just this past Friday afternoon as I was walking downtown with my son, two highly intoxicated men jumped off the bench not 10 feet in front of us and started fighting. The cops arrived instantly and had the two men up against the wall in handcuffs - half naked, drooling and bleeding. It was really pleasant. As we were allowed to pass my son said "those men are bad". Yes, I assured him, they are, and he went on to finish his hot chocolate relatively unscathed. If my son had witnessed the beer-can-hurling, I'm pretty sure the conversation would have went the same way. The point is that if you're denying Saskatchewan kids a trip to Mosaic Stadium because they might witness 29,900 people acting totally appropriately, or 100 acting like freaks, why not just go all the way - wrap them up in bubble wrap and keep them home til they're 18.

Finally someone that isn't
Finally someone that isn't ragging on the display.
If the riders do not want any bad displays by fans have some COLD BEER for them
For the 4th or 5th time this year the beer is warm- and I mean when you buy 2 to take down to your seat before the game - they are already warm!!!
trust me I knew we were on brink of riot because of this!
And Mr Wally B head coach of Lions deserves some partial blame as well. When one of your players gets away with a brutal call- tell him to put his head down and come back to the bench and hide and quitely joke with teamates, do not come over in front of opposition fans and do a little ogga bogga dance and thow a football into the stands!!! It isn't alleged that he threw it - HE DID as I watched him!!!!
If Mr Marsh doesnt throw football into crowd nobody thows anything at him!
The first volley of cans came from directly behind the BC bench in the older sections so dont blame the univ section.
all though there were a few cans sent from there and they did make the field but now where close to hittin anyone- but they were pretty good throws- stupid and pointless and carless yes- but you should have seen the distance
and if my memory serves me there were maybe 25 cans thrown
So give us COLD BEER when we come and maybe we wont be so dam foul when our riders suck!
and by the way I did not throw a thing!
Right on Tammy! Our family
Right on Tammy!
Our family was at the game. We have season tickets on the bad side, I mean the east side. We used the incident as a learning opportunity.
1. stringing swear words with a few words interspersed between those swears is not appropriate behaviour and it makes you look foolish. Dressing up in fun costumes, watermelons, etc Does NOT.
2. Throwing something at anyone at anytime is not appropriate. Someone can be seriously injured. It is really easy to teach UNSPORTSMAN like conduct by fans.
3. Watching pro athletes showboating is how to teach UNSPORTSMAN like behaviour by players.
Being there with my kids has been an exciting and fabulous experience. This last game was not really any different - except they had some important life lessons to learn.
Morale of the story - hopefully both of my kids will stand up to the inappropriate behaviour they witness while participating in sports they have played (or aren't embarassed by their parents who call out the inappropriate behaviour). We were able to teach them the "in the moment" unsportsman like conduct they witnessed. They certainly needed that lesson last year based on the behaviour of the coaches, players and spectators of games they played last year.
the conversation would have went the same way.
Bad English, Tammy.
The Lions got what they asked for. You want to be stupid enough to be in the face of fans that witnessed another in a massive volume of bad calls by the CFL referees, and then taunt them with stupid gestures and then throw the football at them, then you better keep your helmet on.
Did anyone notice that the barrage of beer cans stopped as fast as they started? The fans proved their point and then moved on. If BC or any other team wants to take us on, then you better be prepared for us to protect our turf. And we traded you for a reason, Paul. We ship all our sucks to other teams.
And who in their right mind allows beer cans at a sporting event? Even NASCAR doesn't allow it.
Rider fans
I was at that game and in that section. I was not surprized to see the beers hit the field. The behavior from the rider fans depicted the behavior from the lions players. I saw one playe flip the fans the finger before the beers were thrown. Murphy one B.C.'s o-lineman was taunting the fans all along the bench from the start of the game. Go ahead descipline the fans for the behavior of the few fans, but I agree we have to defend or turf. Buono simply like he did in Calgary does not have control over his players, or he encourages this behavior. McCallum IS a SUCK!!!! Need I say more.
Rider fans
The B.C. player threw a football in the stands. Footballs are meant to be thrown. The person who caught it will treasure the souvenir forever. Something tells me the B.C. players don't feel the same way way about the beer cans. And to all the rider fans who think they are the best fans in the CFL, your living in fantasy world. We are no different than Montreal, Hamilton or any other fans in the league.
There are actions and
There are actions and reactions. This was not an action on the part of the fans, but a reaction to the missed call, and the provocation of the thrown football.
If the BC players wanted to engage the fans by throwing the ball at them, they succeeded. Was it right to throw beer cans? No....... was it understandable? Yes! And beer cups, not cans should be used at sporting events.
what people in this province
First, Tammy, maybe you should read the LeaderPost interview with Clermont where he says the city should be embarrassed. Then, we have people justifying their immature and inebriated behaviour because the beer isn't cold enough when he/she buys two cans. I have an idea. Don't buy beer. Sit and watch the game and enjoy the sport, not the idea of getting tanked. Pathetic people in this province. We, for some reason, are becoming a redneck, and proud of it, province.
Good point Tammy
I'm glad to have found someone who feels the same as I do about this exhibition. There is absolutely no excuse for the actions of these can tossers just as there is no excuse for Marsh to rub a bad call in the face of the fans. But for the media folk to go on and on and on about this, is ridiculous. These people do not represent me as a fan and while I hated to see it, the act hasn't embarrassed me, I'm not like them nor are 99.99% of the folks at the game. Why is it that we feel the need to make every thing that happens into a story that usually only serves to give the offenders the attention the wanted in the first place.
okay okay this has gone on
okay okay this has gone on long enough
i'm the judge and jury here
the 24 fans that threw cans out of over 30,945 you are 75% guilty
smarten up and dont act like that(actually rounds off to close to .08 of the total fans ironic eh)
Mr Wally Bozo I mean Buno and Mr Marsh 15% guilty- Wally control your players, if I was coach and mine acted like yours they would be long gone and you know what it wont hurt your cholesterol either
Riders or whoever looks after the beer-10% guilty - do not go back to cups- it will only create more line-ups
have beer COLD that will insure people are not ticked off before the game starts and hey maybe the beer drinkers wont drink hard stuff and do things like throw stuff on field
and also find a way to get more bathrooms!!!!!
so case is closed and remember to set your alrms for sunday for the early game in montreal!
