Over on the rowdy east side, some so called 'fans' embarrassed the Rider nation with boorish beer throwing. I'm hearing people complain that BC Lions players were egging the fans on, and even may have sparked it by throwing a football into the crowd. If there is any substance to that, then hopefully it will be part of the CFL investigation. But it doesn't change the impression viewers across Canada would have formed as they watched beer cans sailing through the air.
Idiotic at any time, but on a night when we were honouring Ron Lancaster even more inappropriate. But then, so was the inability of a few drunken louts to observe a moment of silence for the Little General.
Sadly, it’s typical. Last year, when a playoff game fell on Remembrance Day, some morons hooted and hollered during the moment of silence.
So, what’s the answer? Should we ban beer sales? Wouldn’t bother me, but I don’t think it would solve the problem. Some will always find a way to sneak booze in. Better security? Perhaps.
In response to Paul McCallum, I do take my son to games, but when he was younger, I will say that there were times when I wondered why. Foul mouthed, drunken troglodytes, under the misapprehension that others cared about their views on the game or the refereeing, made for something less than a family-friendly atmosphere.
Perhaps if we had enough security to keep an eye on things and if they started tossing those people out a little more quickly, the rest of us, the real football fans, wouldn’t have to endure the idiots and the dishonour they bring to all of us.

I have never been to a sports game but I do know how to act when in a theatre audience, school function, and other public occasions. Just try to remember people that sinking to the lowest common denominator does nothing but put you on the bottom of the pile with all the other stinky shoes...
How silly we look
My wife and I have never attended a Rider game, but recently we made a decision to drive sometime this fall from P.A. to Regina for a weekend of shopping, touring around, and enjoying a pro football game. However, after watching all those morons throw beer cans at the BC bench we have decided not to attend a game in person. We might even quit watching on TV. If the brain trust that runs Taylor Field (yes I still call it that) can't enforce some basic rules or have some semblance of order at games, you are bound to lose more than two fans. And for you drunken, ill-behaving creeps in the stands, grow up!
Rowdy Rider Fans
At the start of the game I was totally embarrassed that people were hooting and hollering during the "Moment of Silence" That being said I was certainly disgusted with the Rider Fans who partook in the "Beer Can Incident" behind the Lion's Bench. My suggestion to deal with this on this occasion is this. Given the amount of Cameras that T.S.N. had around the stadium and what they showed of the incident. I suggest the Rider Executive seize the T.S.N. tapes of the game and use them to identify the culprits and proceed to have them charged with "Assault With a Deadly Weapon". I think a Criminal charge will teach the people that they can't do that type of thing and also that WE, TRUE RIDER FANS do not tolerate that kind of behavour.
Perspective
Firstly, I agree, any fan caught on tape throwing something at the players should face charges..... end of story!
To address the other issues, I will try in my uncouth way to do that.
1 - Players throw balls into the fans after a play. Every team does whether in their own stadium or at an away game. In fact, Direct West does it every game. My son has been pushed over by other fans trying to get those little yellow balls. As a fan you expect that and you want to catch it to get a keepsake.
2 - The majority of stuff thrown was beer cans but there were also water and cola bottles as well. Please do not label all throwers as drinkers. And please do not label all us drinkers as throwers. It was mob mentality that caused the issue to continue.
3 - In order for the Lions to throw beer cans back they had to get there somehow.
4 - Refs make bad calls all the time, so an alleged facemask should not have caused this issue (I personally don't think it was a facemask)
5 - As a season ticket holder of over 10 years and a beer drinker at the games... note drinker not drunk... I think the fans were frustrated because we have had an amazing season so far even with all the injuries. And the Riders were having a bad game. Thus people directed their frustration at the Lions for the smallest thing.
6 - I do consider us the best fans in the league but occasionally we slip (remember the snowball incident). And we slipped big this time. For those of you that know who threw stuff on the field, walk over to them and wack them on the head and say smarten up. If they complain about the refs, ask them to apply for an official's job next year..... etc
Enjoy the game and taunt the opposing teams and fans, but do it with style and class.
I now get off my soap box
DAT
Murray, Yes those that threw
Murray,
Yes those that threw beer cans shouldn't be allowed back, but only for the rest of the season. I am not justifying this at all, but what happened is nothing at all in comparison to the dog pound in Oakland, not even close. Keep up the great work, and how about some perspective on the votes that really count, the east :)
Further Point
I get that people are mad that some foolish folk retaliated to a pro football player egging them on an tossing stuff at them first (I refer to the football being tossed into the stands). But the fact remains that if this was the NFL and Terrell Owens taunted the fans and even tossed a football at the most obnoxious of the bunch he would be suspended.
In the CFL it has not been talked about by the sports media in any significant manner. Seems everyone is hung up on the retaliation (which I do not condone). I hope that once the CFL finishes their investigation we see a suspension coming to the B.C. lion who started the mess and we hear the sports media actually discussing the incident from both sides. Don't just hate on the fans who retaliated, take a look at why, that is the job of journalists.
