What a way to start a morning. The Dominion Institute put out a list of the things people believe define Canada.
The top ten included the maple leaf, hockey, the beaver, peacekeeping, and this all makes sense. But there…in the top ten...I nearly spat out the morning coffee when I saw….PIERRE TRUDEAU??????
There’s a Heimlich moment. I just can’t swallow that! Pierre Trudeau defines Canada? Not my Canada. Pierre Trudeau was one of the worst prime ministers in the history of this country and we have a long list of pretty crappy prime ministers.
A brilliant mind without doubt, a philosopher king. Especially the king part. Trudeau was an autocrat who despised us, who preferred to rule than govern, who screwed the west over. When he wasn’t giving us the finger or suspending civil liberties over a kidnapping, he was wrecking the oilpatch and ignoring the worst economic downturn since the 30’s to focus on building his legacy with the constitution.
Lester Pearson, Sir John A., Tommy Douglas…if you’re looking for politicians who cared about Canadians and helped shape Canada in a visionary way, they do exist. But Trudeau is not on my list.

Hey Murray -Trudeau was just the sign of the times to come. One of many Liberals who only knew Canada went west of Ont. when they wanted something.After him we had Teflon Jean,Mafia Martin and now Dippy Dion who wants to play Robbing Hood to gain eastern seats. I truly hope I see the day when Canada does not go west of Ont. Can you imagine what a wonderful country the 4 western provinces would be. " The true north stong and Liberal free"

I couldn't agree more. This country is still reeling from the negative effects of Pierre Elliot Hisself. Where do you want to start? NEP? Public debt? Turning the costitution on its head? One could go on all day. Thanks for the blog.

The person who says Tommy Douglas is not a great Canadian should simply move to the USA, where he and George Bush can preside over millions who get no health care, and maybe he could help bomb some Muslims along the way. Get a life, buddy. When millions were going without doctors and health care, Douglas made sure they did...and that is not a great man?

Agree on the Tommy Douglas comment, agree he was a socialist. Not a "Great Canadian". Trudeau also foisted the metric system on Canada at humongous cost to the country, it was supposed to aid trade, he was anti USA and just who do we do the most trade with?

The great thing about Canada, regardless of the political parties, is the fact that we can all have our own opinion. I totally disagree with Murray. (Usually I don't... how odd.)
Trudeau had guts. I loved it. I had no problem with the finger incident, it wasn't like he was going to gain their love regardless of what he did. Declaring Marshall Law during the October Crisis took guts. He wasn't going to listen to the "bleeding hearts" and risk more violence and bullying from the FLQ. He didn't put up with crap.
And on a personal note, I think he was a noble man. He was a single father, and raised his sons to be noble and respectful as well.
As for Tommy Douglas... well, you can think what you want about him now, but I wouldn't want to live in this country had it never been touched by his ideas.
We are Canadians, and as such, have been touched by each of these people to make us the kind of Canadians we are. They are part of us, like it or not.
