The CFL season is two thirds done and very soon as a member of the Football Reporters of Canada I will be asked to submit nominees for year-end player awards. There are some tough decisions that are going to have to be made by me and many others across this country. Without further adieu, here’s who I would be selecting to take home the hardware.
MVP-Anthony Calvillo
The arrival of Marc Trestman in Montreal has meant a renaissance for the Montreal quarterback. He is having one of his best ever seasons.
Top Defensive Player-Cam Wake
I can already hear Rider fans squawking at this because I haven’t taken Mo Lloyd but really how can you argue with the numbers the BC defensive lineman is putting up. He is an absolute monster and sadly for Lloyd an absolute shoo-in. He won it last year and he’ll win it again this year.
Top Lineman-Patrick Kabongo
The Eskimos need an offensive line if they were going to get better in 2008. They found one led by Kabongo. He impresses me in a lot of Eskimo games that I watch.
Top Canadian-Paris Jackson
BC always has a strong Canadian contingent with guys like Jackson, Jason Clermont and Brent Johnson. With all apologies to Johnson who would make the all-Mitch team, I’ll go with Paris.
Top Rookie-Weston Dressler
If he was to make an impact in his first year it was to be as a returner but injuries have shown us what type of all-around player he is. I knew this guy was special when I saw him in camp for the first time.
Top Special Teams Player-Dominique Dorsey
How is it the Toronto running back never returned kicks the way he is now when he was in Saskatchewan????
That’s the way I see it going into the final third of the season and yes things can change and change in a hurry. I’d like to know who you are thinking about for year-end awards and please try to take your green glasses off when making your choices. However, you can also let me know who your Rider nominees are if you wish.

You forgot coach of the year
You forgot coach of the year and that is Ken Miller. Will your mind on Calvillo change after this weekend when he is kissing turf??
I can't say I disagree with
I can't say I disagree with any of these picks. Although, at this point, with my green coloured glasses on I'd have to say Wes Cates is tied with Calvillo for MVP.
