The team has just named Roberto Luongo their team captain. That's right, they named their goalie captain, but since he can't rock the "C", defenceman, and assistant captain Willie Mitchell will do all the talking with the officials. This means that the team will have three players with "A"s, and no official "C".

This takes me back to my minor hockey days with the Bobcats here in Saskatoon. (Congrats to my work associates Davis and Donovan Remenda who were recently traded from the Redwings to the Bobcats, welcome to a true winning franchise.) One year, my coach didn't want to have a captain, instead, a bunch of assistants, 3 for the home jerseys, and three different guys for the away jerseys, so no one had their feelings hurt. That was a tier 3 team, that's what teir 3 teams do, not NHL teams. ( Just so you know, I am now the leading scorer of the Neon Flamingoes in the A division of the Credit Union Centre Hockey League, so I am way better than a tier 3 player, just so everyone out there knows, not that I am bragging or anything, because I would never do that on my blog, that's just wrong.)

OK, so your three assistants are Willie Mitchell, Matias Ohlund, and Ryan Kessler. ........ No wonder no one got the C, no one on this team is good enough to wear it. Usually it's the teams best player that wears it, and on this team, Luongo is the best player by a country mile! But even so, he is a freakin goalie! This bugs me almost as much as Jason Varitek wearing a C, yep, a baseball player, but at least he got to wear his letter. (Baseball teams don't wear letters.)

So my point is this, the reason for wearing the C is so the officials know who to talk to when there are any problems, and when anything needs sorting out, as well, the designated player is usually the only one allowed to talk to the officials if said players team has any problems. Goalies arn't allowed to do any of this. This is just the sign of a franchise, trying to make the only superstar on their team, feel really good about himself, so he doesn't want to leave once they start sucking really bad. Good luck with that one guys, just one less hurdle for the Oilers to jump on their way to the cup this year.

Gary, as a Canuck's fan I
Gary, as a Canuck's fan I was a little shocked when I heard about this. Then I came I to accept it for what it is. Luongo is the leader of this team and everyone on the team knows it. I don't see anything wrong with him being the captain, I know it is a little strange because they are going where no one has gone in a long time with naming Luongo the captain.
Also you need to get your facts straight. Mitchell will be designated to talk to officials and Ohlund will be taking ceremonial face-offs as the longest serving Canuck.
As for this team, I believe they are going to surprise a lot of people this year, everyone thinks they are going to tank, but I think they will be fine. And no the Oilers will not be winning the cup this year or next for that matter. I don't think the Canucks are a cup contender by any means, but with #1 in the net, they have a chance to win on any given night.
P.S. Flyers going to win the cup ;)
Lets see who gets the last
Lets see who gets the last laugh!
You suck Gary
Gary, you're only leading in scoring because I haven't been to any games yet. I'm going to get a new stick and then score all the goals. There will be none left for you. You can maybe get some assists though.
By the way, Luongo is captain because of his nice hair, not his ability. So wavy and free. It's too bad he has to wear a helmet.
