It’s probably the most recognized song (next to the national anthem) in the country (with apologies to Nickleback – although all of their songs pretty much sound the same, so the cumulative effect may be right up there).
It’s the call – if not to action – to the TV. The game is about to start. Grab your juice box kids, a cold one for the grownups, and settle in for a Canadian tradition. There’s something about the song that we all react to – we’ve been trained over the last 30 or 40 years or so to migrate to the screen.
News that the CBC may, or may not, continue to use the song has created a mini-firestorm across the country. Don’t get me wrong, I like change – generally speaking – and if this is just a part of change – so be it. At this point it looks to be a pretty good bargaining move for the songwriter to get the cash she thinks she deserves.
Will the CBC retain the rights? Probably. If for nothing else, than to make sure TSN doesn’t scoop them.

Theme song ... soul food
HI,
The Pavlov concept, ya... that;s cute. I don't mind,(or sans mind), being called a hockey dog when cued.
You could search out and find a Canadian any where in the world by playing just a few notes of the Hockey Theme, as hearts and minds would rise above the crowd and the pride in our eyes giving us away.
It's the pettiness of this that's embarrassing and disheartening this nation, money turns those negotiating into fools. They know what their playing with. How did such a few unelected people get to piss off so many?
Lets just get it back, cause hungry dogs get angry and loud...
