I know I’m supposed to turn off the outside world when I’m on holidays – take that breather, relax, and refocus.  But I’ve come to the determination I simply can’t.  If it’s possible, I want to stay connected.

Last year - my first year out at my little cabin at Regina Beach – I made a solemn vow - no phone, no TV, no Internet.  I would rough it.  Well, that’s a relative term considering I have running water, indoor plumbing, all the major appliances and a furnace – but I would back off technology – take that break on the weekends.  It lasted one summer.

I am blogging with my laptop on the deck – the morning sun in my face (I had to turn the screen brightness up a bit) listening to the birds chirp, with a coffee by my side.  I have hi-speed Wi Fi now.  When I’m done, I will probably catch the rest of the morning headlines on my TV – with full cable goodness, I might add.  Still no phone – well not entirely true – I have cell coverage here and have been texting a few friends already today.  But no radio.  Unless I’m catching it using streaming audio through our website…

Yup, the grand experiment lasted one season.  For me, knowing what’s going on in the world is more relaxing than not knowing.  How did I come to this?

Rewired…  Dave

What is the deal with escaping from our electronics?

I had to smile as I read your blog this afternoon.

I too have found myself lauding the joy of disconnecting when I head out to the acreage. No phone.... No TV.... nothing to interfere with my "relaxation".

It is a point of pride that I can disconnect this way. It is an emotion created as a stew of nostalgia, testosterone and the myth that pre-cell phone/internet days were less complicated and somehow more pure and virtuous.

I continue to cling to this position, but only as a result of the lack of frequency that I leave the city to "escape" technology while at the acreage.

Perhaps I will figure out the attractiveness of this escape from the electronic age while cutting the 3 acres of grass (on my riding lawn tractor listening to my Ipod) the next time I escape the electronic world.

Enjoy your time "away".

Glenny
