Dir: Rob Cohen Stars: Brendon Fraser, Maria Bello, Jet Li
Synopsis: In the far East, trouble-seeking father and son duo Rick and Alex O'Connell unearth the mummy of the Emperor of Qin, a shapeshifting entity who was cursed by a wizard centuries before.
Thankfully, the Dark Knight edged the Mummy out for top spot this week, but it was close. I knew I was in trouble when I saw that this is what was opening last week. I absolutley hate the Mummy series. One could make an argument that the first movie was harmless fun, but they've since degenerated into a brainless Indiana Jones rip-off. These movies are truly one of Hollywood's lowest common denominators --- they're made fully for profit, not for entertainment.
Even the addition of the talented Jet Li didn't win me back. The Mummy:COTDE was an over the top garbage heap, piled high with confusing and jumbled action scenes, lame cookie cutter characters, jokes misfiring left and right --- and worst of all for a movie like this --- bad CGI! I'm truly embarrassed for everyone involved in the making of this movie.
The funniest part though --- they ripped off the father and son schtick from Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skulls --- but they even screwed that up! Brendon Fraser is 39, Maria Bello is 41, and the guy that plays their kid (Luke Ford) is 27 years old! Apparently Fraser was 12 and Bello was 14 when they had him? I'm telling you, it's insulting --- some parts of Hollywood think that we're all drooling idiots. Well, I guess the movie made $40 million dollars, so perhaps they're correct?
Anyway --- wrap this Mummy in cheesecloth and bury it under a pyramid --- The Mummy: COTDE gets The Dreaded Turkey (Zero Dorks out of 5 on the Geek-o-Meter)!!!!
