Dir: Michael Patrick King Stars: Sarah Jessica Parker, Kim Cattrall, Kristin Davis, Cynthia Nixon, Chris Noth
Synopsis: Unlike everyone else (including the spoiler filled trailers), I'm not going to tell you what the movie is about, because there are plenty of surprises --- but suffice to say --- the ladies are back!
This was an interesting movie to review because of the company I kept. C95's Shauna Foster had a Sex and the City cocktail party at Durand's shoes in Saskatoon before the show. I was the only man in the group --- there were a bunch of ladies from the station, about 30 contest winners, and my own fiance Jenny, all hyped to win some prizes and see the show. It was a great time! However, walking over to the theatre with these women, I started to get scared. One of them leaned over to me and said, "So...Sex in the City is going to get a good review." I replied, "I hope so! We'll see how it turns out!" To which she said, "No...perhaps you're not getting me," her fingernails dug into my arm, "Sex and the City WILL get a good review." Yipes!

Seriously though, it was a great idea to go to the movie with the film's intended audience, just the way I like to see kids movies in a theatre full of kids --- you really get to experience the movie through their eyes. That being said --- I like the show, especially in it's earlier years, and I have seen every episode. The movie didn't open to great reviews --- but I think I can safely say that fans of the show will not be disappointed. It stayed very true to the television show, and expands the stories of the fashionable women in the city.

My only complaint (now I hope there's not a gang of female "tuffs" waiting for me after work today) was that the movie was indulgently long --- just under 2 and a 1/2 hours. That's much too long for a romantic comedy, and nothing really happens in the movie for almost an hour. They could have trimmed at least 40 minutes out of the start. But once it does get going, it settles into the groove and gives us the characters and storylines we're craving.
I'm going to go with 3 and a 1/2 dorks out of 5 on the Geek-o-Meter. I imagine that number will go up or down for you, based on how much you like the show. I'd be interested to hear someone's point of view that wasn't a fan of the show.
What did the rest of you think of the movie?
