I came back from my honeymoon (London was great, and Paris was mindblowing, but now I need a holiday that involves less running around!) just in time for the big release of The Godfather on Blu-ray.
Here's my question --- do we need more versions of movies released in umpteen different formats? How many versions of the Godfather have I owned? When does it all end???
Okay, now before we get into it, here's something to think about. I recently got a Blu-ray player and I have to say that it makes DVD look like VHS. It's amazingly crystal clear picture and top shelf sound. But, I still maintain that the next big "format" will be full digital, media on demand. No discs. Just a signal through a cord. So I'll be wary about how many Blu-rays I'm going to buy. I'm torn on this Godfather thing. I already own the 4 disc DVD version, and it's a pretty good set.
The Godfather and The Godfather Part II have gone through an extensive frame-by-frame restoration, because the original negatives were starting to decay. It took over a year to complete. There are also new documentaries and special features not seen on previous versions. However, if you've seen one "behind the scenes" doc, as interesting as the making of The Godfather was, you've seen them all.
What do you think? Are you moving to Blu-ray? And if you collect movies --- will you do it just for fun, or will you collect them obsessively? Any interest in seeing a restored Godfather on Blu-ray, or will you just stick to your DVD version (or VHS for some!)?

I say screw it! Go with the Blu-ray! Sure the digital thing will be here soon, but carpe diem! You can't tell me you don't want to see Iron Man next week in all its glory!

To Paul: How does renting from a video store increase one's movie collection? I think you've missed the point of what he's saying. Some people take pride in collecting movies and having a large catalogue to choose from. Besides, you can barely find anything in a video store anymore.
