At the Broadway Theatre in Saskatoon --- Garbage Warrior starts on Saturday!
This is the story of controversial architect Mike Reynolds, who criticizes the rest of the building industry for all the waste it creates. Reynolds has been building experimental homes, using pop cans and tires to construct from (I seem to remember building forts like this as a kid...apparently I was ahead of my time...).
In "Garbage Warrior," Reynolds describes one of his new homes, called the Phoenix: "There's nothing coming into this house, no power lines, no gas lines, no sewage lines coming out, no water lines coming in, no energy being used ... We're sitting on 6,000 gallons of water, growing food, sewage internalized, 70 degrees year-round ... What these kind of houses are doing is taking every aspect of your life and putting it into your own hands ... A family of four could totally survive here without having to go to the store."
Reynolds claims that his buildings can operate off the electricity grid, requiring little or no mortgage payment and no utility bills. The catch is you have to live in a tire fort, I guess.
Also coming out this weekend --- Adam Sandler in "You Don't Mess With The Zohan".
Seriously? Does anyone like this guy anymore? Is it just me, or have all his movies become a bland formula of making fun of whatever minority comes to his mind (women, homosexuals, Isreali's, handicapped people --- you name it, he's using it for comedy), then they tack on a lame feel-good ending with a message of tolerance that contradicts all the so-called comedy you've been sitting through for the last hour and a half. This dude is tired...tired. And by the way, ROB SCHNEIDER ISN'T FUNNY!!!! If "Zohan" is representative of the state of comedy in North America, then we're in serious trouble.
I think the big box office blast this weekend will be Kung Fu Panda. It stars Jack Black, Hot Lips Jolie, Dustin Hoffman, Seth Rogan and more. It's a Dreamworks animated cartoon about well, about a Kung Fu Panda. It's getting good advance buzz, so I'll check it out and let you know on Monday!

And by the way --- I know I'm the Movie Geek and not the sports guy, but I'd like to add my voice to the dissent over turfing the Hockey Night in Canada theme! What's up with that? We might as well just stop calling ourselves Canada. This is worse than when they cancelled the lunchtime Flintstones. Kids haven't been growing up properly since. And now this...it's a crushing defeat for all Canadians.
Keep watching the screens!
