I wasn’t feeling like partying my face off so I didn’t drink any red beer or go see the fireworks. Instead I walked down to Broadway in Saskatoon, got a coffee and hit the record store. I picked up my wife, who was returning to Canada from Chicago (pretty patriotic timing!), then, in the lazy late afternoon, I watched an amazing documentary about the Iraq War, called No End in Sight.
I learned that the war blew up, not so much due to an evil Bush regime, but because of the stupidity and greed of a few people. It was a really engaging movie. Now, I know this doesn’t sound like a real Canada Day tradition, but I’m a movie nerd. When I get a day off, I like to lay around and watch movies. After watching those poor Iraqi people and even the American soldiers put into terrible positions by idiotic and greedy leaders, I felt that I was celebrating Canada Day by having the freedom to lie around on my couch like a sack of potatoes. People in Iraq don’t really get to do that.
My wife rolled her eyes at me when I told her how patriotic I was for lying on the couch watching TV. But nuts to her --- my view is that this country has a lot of problems that we all need to take responsibility for, but all in all, we are very lucky to live in a place where we have such freedom, for the most part. And my wife said I didn’t learn anything...
Anyway:
Tune into News Talk this Saturday at 3 PM on Entertainment Weekend with Craig Silliphant!

The Transformers blew the doors off the box office with a whopping 201 million dollars in the first 5 days!!! But is it worth seeing? You’ll get my review, plus reactions from other critics and fans on this year’s biggest blockbuster so far.
Also --- there was some heated back and forth this week after my blog review of the Transformers --- so we’re going to talk about the question --- should a critic review kids movies or action blockbusters? Some readers of my blog didn’t think so --- some readers did --- so we’re going to explore this thought on the show. I’m going to get the thoughts of other local critics, media types, and fans of the franchise --- and I’ll be reading your comments right off my blog. Comment here, or under the Transformers review!
Plus the latest on Michael Jackson and a rundown of everything that’s opening in theatres across the province! Previews of Sugar, Ice Age 3, and Public Enemies!
And last but not least --- Darryl Kesslar from Plan 9 Films will be in studio, talking about his house concert new series on SCN --- The Neighbor’s Dog (which premieres on Wednesday July 8th on SCN and is replayed on Saturdays).
Listen to the show and give us your feedback! You can check back one blog to get my review of Transformers, so feel free to comment there.
This is going to be fun! Tune in Saturday at 3 PM for Entertainment Weekend with Craig Silliphant --- on News Talk Radio!

Movie Critics and their reviews
Critics should review action blockbusters and kids movies for the simple reason that they are just like any other movie. Just because they are over the top, prone to fanboyism, and designed simply to make massive amounts of money, doesn't mean that they get a free pass. I think the majority of people that wanted to see TF2 had their minds made up before any critic's review. Its fair to say that Michael Bay deserved the criticisms for TF2 but I don't think he cares. I won't watch his movies because I know what to expect: the same generic action flick full of explosions and tight fitting clothes.
Oops!!! My apologies!
Hi all!
Apologies for the naughty word that was the Michael Bay keyboard. I actually didn't see it, and couldn't figure out what the hubbub was all about until someone referenced the word directly. I have removed the offending picture and the subsequent comments. My apologies to anyone who took offense --- I should have looked closer at the picture (some of you have eagle eyes!). Though I don't believe people should allow certain words to have power over them, I also recognize that this is the reality we live in --- and it is inappropriate on a family friendly site like this. That being said, in reference to Transformers, if you don't like bad language --- do not take your kids to this movie. It may look like a toy commercial, but there is quite a bit of bad language and adult situations.
I now return you to your regularily scheduled blog! Have a good weekend!
