Getting used to new hours, a new show and suggestions that I am more Roughrider fan than I care to admit to myself. But by far the weirdest thing happened over the last seven days.
After watching the Winnipeg Blue Bombers come from ahead to choke away a Banjo Bowl win over the Riders, I placed a call to Rider CEO and President Jim Hopson. I asked him to come on the Cory Kolt Show (heard Monday to Friday from 4-6) for the entire province to hear me ask him to stop picking on my team. We have had enough. Towards the end of out conversation, Jim said something I've heard a number of people say to me during my four years in Saskatchewan: "you'll get rid of that blue and gold." In fact, my wife Giselle (who is a Rider fan) has even tried to convert me. But to this point, no matter how much I love her, the words of Meatloaf ring in my ear -- "I'd do anything for love, but I won't do that."
On Friday morning, I was working in my office with my producer when a package was delivered. It came with a Saskatchewan Roughrider logo on it. As I opened the package, out came a business card belonging to Jim Hopson and an autographed 2007 Grey Cup Champions t-shirt. On it was a message from one of the nicest men in this province, that being the aforementioned Jim Hopson. It read "Welcome to the green side Cory."

Is Jim Hopspn playing the role of Darth Vader in this battle to bring me over to what I 've grown up believing is the dark side? And if Jim is Darth Vader, then what does that make Mitchell Blair? If this is true, then I guess that makes me Luke Skywalker and we have come to the point of the battle in Empire Strikes Back where Jim has cut off my hand with his green and white lightsaber and is offering me his helping hand. Accept his offer and I would be turning my back on my family, friends to enter a world that includes Lancaster, Reed, Ridgeway, Austin, etc. Or I can not accept his hand and can stay with a ship that is captained by a clueless Coach in Doug Berry and General Manager Brendan Taman. I would be leaving behind a world that includes Poplowski, Brock, Murphy and others that made me smile as a youngster. What to do, what to do?
At the end of Empire Strikes Back, Luke turns down Vader's offer and is eventually resuced by his friends. I was rescued myself thanks to a Bomber win on Friday night and a Rider loss on Saturday night in B.C. But as we know, the end of Empire was not the end of the story. The adventure continued with new and interesting characters entering the story.
For now, the shirt pictured above is hanging in a closet next to a Rider jersey that was handed to me during the celebrations that erupted along the Green Mile in Regina after the Riders beat the Bombers. Despite the efforts from people around me, despite the fact the Riders show more guts and heart than any team in the league, and despite the fact they use the Bombers as their personal whipping post, I'm just not ready to trade in the blue and gold for green and white. Nor do I believe Riderville would welcome me with open arms.
I have heard from many former Winnipegers who now call Saskatchewan home that the longer you live here the easier it becomes to cheer for the Riders. While that may be destiny, for now I'm not ready to go green. Besides, I have nothing in my wardrobe that goes well with green!

If you're older than 20 and
If you're older than 20 and you switch favourite teams you were never that committed to begin with. That applies not just to Bombers/Riders but to any team in any sport. I've never understood people that can do that. I realize the pressure as an on air personality to tow the Go Riders party line must be immense. Still, are you going to switch to being an Eskimos fan if you get a job in Edmonton? Are you going to switch back to the Bombers if they get a coach you like more? If Micheal Bishop completes one less hail mary during the banjo bowl and Winnipeg holds on would you be having these traitorous thoughts? I'm sure you're not that weak a fan that one bad season can shake your faith? A major source of Rider Pride is that so many ex flatlanders turn out in green when the Riders play on the road. The same people that boast of that surely could not hold it against you when you turn up at work in Blue and Gold.
Winnipeg victory
yes the bombers won this past weekend and the Riders lost, but the lions actually have a very good team, which the Riders will beat on Sat, the bombers on the other hand beat a hapless argo team with no rudder! So remember, as my daughter has often told me, come to the dark side...we have cookies!!!!
ever hear of reading too
ever hear of reading too much into things? PS everyone looks good in green, and deep down i am sure you feel that much is true of yourself too!
Cory, why fight it? You
Cory, why fight it? You yourself have said you have gone through a lot of change recently and a natural extension of that should be to finally rid yourself of that blue and gold albatross that hangs around your neck, and for the record, we WOULD let you into the greatest fraternity in sports. Choose wisely Luke!
It won't be long . . .
Now you see, not only is that a Rider shirt you have on but you have also accepted the fact that the Rider Nation are defending Grey Cup Champions. Stay here just a bit longer and you will have been converted to the team of Goodness and of what all is right in the CFL....
Holy Cow is That REALLY you?
This is the first time I've seen a picture of you. From the sound of your voice and some of your topics I thought you'd be OLD. I figured you were in your 50's, wow. :-) Oh & "Porno" is not a bad word. Can parents not tell their kids "don't worry about it I'll tell you when your older." or my favourite, "Art movies for dads." :-)
