90 years ago, World War l came to an end...at a huge cost to Canada, and the world. 68,000 Canadians gave their lives in the Great War, and this week a special project happening across the country pays tribute and also helps us better understand the sacrifice these men and women made. Each evening, names of the fallen are projected on the outside wall of the Saskatchewan Legislature, something that is being done at a number of sites across the country. You can also watch the same event streaming online from the National War Memorial. While you are on the 1914-1918 website, you can do a name search from the list of those who gave their lives. I found four soldiers with the name of Loucks, 2 were with the Manitoba Regiment, which got me to wondering if they may be relatives.

Help them all
While it is a good thing to honour the war veterans from the first World War it is also very important to remember that most of the veterans from that war are now dead from natural causes.
We need to focus our attention this year on the new breed of veterans coming home from Afghanistan and how we can help them readjust to life in a peaceful society as well as honour fallen heros from a long ago war, especially since the vast bulk of those heros are no longer with us anymore.
At the 75th aniversary of the P.P.C.L.I held in 1989 in Calgary saw a grand total of 4 World War one veterans in attendance. Less than 30 surviving world war 2 vets and lots of Korean vets and Peacekeepers.
While we are honouring those who sacrificed in World War one it is very important to keep in mind our obligation as a society to those veteran peacekeepers who risked their lives without any media coverage and almost in complete isolation from the general Canadian public.
How many readers understand for instance the sacrifice made by the 26 members of the Canadian Army killed while conducting missions in the '90s in Bosnia? Or of those Canadian who have lost their lives over the years on one of the many peacekeeping missions? Or suffered debilitating injuries while performing those duties.
How many of us are ready to help the veterans returning from Afghanistan?
Let's honour our heros and remnember EVERY veteran on this rememberance day
