A Strong Finish

Could one have written a better script? At the mid-way point of the Vancouver Games I had a bitter-sweet feeling. The bitter came with the death of the Georgian luge competitor, a banged up Canadian ski team that didn't achieve expected results, a men's hockey team that looked shaky out of the gate and negative world wide press. The games got off to a bitter start. The sweet feeling came with Alex Bilodeau's gold medal in moguls, a Maelle Ricker gold medal in snowcross and the fact that the women's hockey team were mowing over their competition as expected.

I felt alot like Wayne Gretzky when he left Edmonton while I was trying to think of what to write about this week. I promised my self that I would NOT do two Olympic related blogs, just like Gretz "promised Mess" that he wouldn't cry, but I just couldn't shy away from all the awesomeness that has come out of Vancouver over the last couple of weeks.

Hot/Not Olympic Ediition

Time for the Friday "Who’s Hot-Who’s Not." The Olympic Edition....

Hot: Team Canada. I’m claiming hockey genius status right now after predicting that the extra game would be good for Canada’s chemistry and the Russians couldn’t be looking forward to playing our boys. Now, it’s onto the gold.

Not: Canadians who were picking Russia to win. No true Canadian would do that, these people should be deported like the traitors they are.

Here's another great photo from the Saskatchewan Archives Website and you might be able to help id these youngsters, especially the lone Leafs fan in the back row. This is the St. Goretti School Hockey Team from April of 1960.

I just love this video from Michael J Fox. You might have seen it during last nights Mens hockey game. The setting is an actual outdoor rink owned by Pat LaFontaine, and yes, it overlooks the Atlantic Ocean.

Drop The Puck!

Ok...after some time to let the bile-bitter taste of losing to the Americans dissipate, here’s why I’m actually feeling pretty hopeful about our Olympic hockey hopes.

Team Canada always seems to play better when it’s in tough. It often seems to need a cold shower of icy skate-spray in its face to reach down and find the next level.

For even though Canada totally outplayed the Americans, the truth is they only scored two goals and while Ryan Miller played well, he wasn’t blindingly brilliant.

Where Is Paul Henderson When We Need Him?

Where is Paul Henderson when we need him?

With Canada’s hockey pride on the line in our home and native Olympics, we dearly need a member of this team to step up and bury some of the chances they’re getting. To outplay the U.S. as badly as Team Canada did and still lose, is worrisome.

But if they can find some of what Team 72 had when their backs were against the wall, then they should be fine.

Every New Year's Eve, I take a moment and let my mind wander over what the following year may bring.

I guarantee "traveling to a earthquake-ravaged developing country with a group of strangers", was not part of the plan.

Isn't that exactly what makes life grand?

Alright, I know I always say I like to focus on the feel good, happy stories in sports, but with the Olympics going on right now, I decided to write a blog about my favorite Olympic moments, and after looking at the list, I noticed that there were more negative stories, than positive.

So, on that note, ladies and gentleman, I give to you "Gary's List Of Radcially Awesome/Are You Freaking Kidding Me, Really? Wow! ........ Olympic Moments."
